Well, my new Opinel #12 just came in the mail. It has the beechwood handle and the high-carbon blade. It is huge. I have no idea what I'll use it for, but all my knives are users so I'm sure something will come up. I really have no idea why I bought it besides - you got it - Because I Just Had To Have It.

Fit and finish are very good for an inexpensive knife. The pivot is tight but not so tight that you break your thumbnail pulling out the blade. Same with the locking ring - a nice firm feel when you turn it to lock the blade in place. It came fairly sharp and the blade is nicely centered. Only flaws I see are a couple of micro chips on the ground edge down near the pivot - they'll come right out when I hit the Sharpmaker. All things considered, I'm really satisfied with this $15 knife.

Really enjoy my Opinels. Terrific bargains and great knives.

You are baiting your audience by not having pictures: one in the hand would be great for scale.

Thank you.

All the best,

oregon

I have one & you can't beat it for an Outdoors knife! It slices through any kind of rope I needed it to when hauling goods in my pickup. I hate to waste & cut rope but, sometimes you just have to. It also does a great job on food prep. For the cost, you just cannot beat it.

Yeah, the No.12 is a handful, that's for sure!!

I've got one, too... I ground the spine to make it a drop-point, and then shortened the handle to match, and sanded it into a much more ergonomic (to my hands, at least!) shape. Makes for a sweet utility knife around the garage or garden.

The ladies at work are always bringing in birthday cakes for employee birthdays. They usually end up cutting the cake with some POS plastic cutlery knife. I always thought the #12 would make a great cake knife I could leave in my desk at work.

It makes a great bread knife. Fresh, dry, hard bread or rolls or bagels, it slices through them very cleanly. I prefer the shorter blades like a #8 for fruit and vegetables, but the 12 can do them also.

I've had mine a few years now. Got it about the time that Camillus released the Cuda Maxx, and I was too poor to afford it.:p

Due to it's low price and expendability, I've put it through more abuse and torture than most any other knives I've owned. (except for my Moras of course):D

I've batoned it through thick limbs and trees, hammered it through 1/2" plywood, scraped, chiseled, and pried old tile and linoleun that had been applied with 10 times too much adhesive, and it's still going strong. That's without mentioning fuzz sticks, marshmallow sticks, ropes, strings cut and general use.

Someday I'm sure to kill the poor ole trooper, but when I finally do I'll bury it with honors.:D

Only mod I made to it was filing out the pivot. hyothetically it should have created more slop, at the benefit of being able to open it easily when it's wet.

Instead it's still plenty tight, and no longer bothers me when the handle gets wet.
