I will probably buy both knives, but if I only got one which would it be? I will usually have a SAK (Tinker) with me. This knife would go backpacking and serve as an more robust bushcraft blade. I think for this purpose, the Svord Peasant would be a better choice. What are your thoughts?

I would get both.

I have a number of Opinels, a #12 in the truck, #6 in the bathroom, #8 in a cabinet, and a #10 whose location is . . . currently unknown.

For precise and fine cutting, an Opinel in the #6-to-#8 range is a good and reliable tool.

For bushcraft, I do believe I'd go with the Peasant. The Svörd is going to be a bit more robust.

That doesn't mean the Opinel is flimsy, but I think I'd have more confidence in the take-a-beatin' ability of the Peasant.

I should point out, however, that the Opinel has a positive lock, both closed and open, while the Peasant relies on your grip and application to the work to keep it open. Depending on your needs, that could be a factor.

I have personal experience with the Opinel, but none with the Svörd, so there is some conjecture here.

From your post I would go with the opinel, lots of choices to pick from and will probley push your victorinox out of your pocket and become your new EDC. I have a svord knife to and on mine the blade is much to thick for great cutting but I still like the knife. But beter yet buy and opinel or just use you victorinox and spend 15 bucks on a mora of some type.

The Svord Peasant is a closer size match to the Opinel 10, so if you have a SAK in pocket, I'g go with the Svord to handle a wider variety of "large" tasks.
Not only that, with the open spine it's easier to clean out than the opinel.

Best advise yet. If you want to collect an old time pocket knife, then the Opinel or Svord is nice. Either of them are good cutters. But if you're really looking for a back packing knife, why go with another folder? In the Victorinox, you already have an industry standard of a quality pocket knife, so it would make more sense to have a light weight but rugged sheath knife. I've got an old Mora number 1 that I've pushed hard for 20 years, and it's still good to go. I think I paid 8.95 for it. It's been on more back packing, canoe, and hiking trips than I can count. Going into the woods, I think you should have a sturdy sheath knife around. Just my opinion of course.

For a robust blade, get the Svord, but for the price as you said, get both

Yes, I was wondering if you guys would recommend a fixed blade instead. I already have a Mora 511 and I regard it highly. One advantage a folder has is there are fewer restrictions on carry than for a fixed blade. I'm not sure if a fixed blade always needs to be carried in the open, although in the wilderness I guess rangers would not hassle you on that point.

I'd go with a pair of Opinels... Try a No. 6 and a No. 10, and I think you'll find they'll take care of almost everything.
As for a fixed blade... try a Jarvenpaa puukko. :D

Ive owned both and for a general use edc knife I believe the opinel is the better more pocket friendly knife the svord can be a little akward feeling in the pocket that being said I feel the svord would be a better hard use knife and for some reason I've always thought friction locks were pretty cool.

A more robust bushcraft blade" .

Mora Triflex for $20, a very comfortable knife with a great blade and it comes with a good sheath

I'll second the Mora. There are a lot of models still available out there with wood scales and carbon steel blades, about as traditional as you can get. I would also get the Opinel and Svord, but then I have a sickness called knife addiction. However, while I would not abuse the Mora, I would not rely solely on either the Opinel or Svord for all my backpacking needs. Take all three and have a great time in the woods. Remember, you can use the Mora in the peanut butter jar :D.

I really like my #7 and #8, never can decide which I like better. Ususally if they work good at food prep in the kitchen they'll do for out doors.

I EDCed an Opinel #7 in carbon for a very long time (long by my standards) and used it for whittling and bushcraft quite a bit. Very comfortable in the hand for hard work.
That being said the Svord is quite simply astonishing for woodwork and basic camp chores. As was stated here, not the most pocket friendly size in the world but it is very light and with a little thought and adjustment of gear, carries reasonably well.
I'm very fond of both and forced to choose would go with Opinel for everyday use and Svord peasant for wilderness use.

Thanks for the responses and the nice photos. Me likey! I definitely have to ask for both on my birthday.
