Anyone else experienced this problem, or knows how to fix it? My new opinel is only sharp from an inch of the tip, and no amount of sharpening will fix it.

It's VERY normal for them to be blunt to only semi-sharp at the tip from the factory, but sharpening it shouldn't take more than 5 minutes. How experienced at sharpening are you? :)

I've really been wondering if Opinel knives being not that sharp out of the box is a US or "outside Europe" thing. Every single one I've bought has had good initial sharpness as in: they cut regular printingpaper.
As far as the tip goes: it does go blunt from hitting the wood in the handle. However, some of the knives I have tend to have this occur over time, others don't because in some of them, the blade doesn't touch the wood. Anyway, Opinel carbon blades are very easy to resharpen. It shouldn't last longer than 5 minutes to let them shave hair.
Opi's are pretty much my favourite inexpensive folders. Got them everywhere. In my car, backpack, around the house. If you have a few of them, you should be able to last a lifetime as far as you need to cut stuff. But then again, you're probably a knife guy as we all are, so you'll need a ton of other blades that you don't actually need;)

And THAT, is one of the truest statements I've ever heard here on Bladeforums!

Yeah, as a fellow Opinel lover, I don't think it should take more than 5 minutes to resharpen and Opinel razor sharp from kick to tip. If it seems like the stone is blunting the tip, then your having a problem with the angle when you get to that part. Try taking it as a whole separate part of the operation. Try to sharpen just the tip starting with about an inch back, and really paaying very close attention to the angle of the blade and stone. 99.99...% of sharpening problems are from the angle not being right or consistent.

Carl.
