I'm thinking of picking up an Opinel as a "picnic knife" - something to toss in the bag when going to the park or the beach. That way I won't have to hand over one of MY knives to whomever might need to cut pepperoni or whatever. How do I care for the carbon steel such that the knife is protected when stored, yet 'food worthy' when I need to use it ?

Hmm.. I remembered someone saying "olive oil" before. I'm sure there are other suggestions coming your way soon.

An old hand on rec.knives used to swear by lard......dunno, though.
BTW, Opinel DO make a stainless knife these days. I don't know what the grade is but it should meet your humble needs.

How about this one when going to a picnic ?
I bought this one when I visited Austria eight years ago. No 13 Opinel.

I think mineral oil works best. It won't get gummy like the vegetable oils, yet it's still edible. Plus, mineral oil is actually good for wood, so there's certainly no problem if you get some on the handle.

Mineral oil both works well, I've also used olive oil without any real problems. Vegetable does tend to gum over time. Lard, huh? I wonder if there are any acids in it?

Adler, that's a great piece. Eight years and looking that good!

Ditto the Peanut Oil, it works.
Even w/ a little staining, it's still a great little picnic knife.
