I've got a number 18 model if that's what you're talking about, but there is also a smaller one called the number 12.
I've abused my number 18 and now it's got quite a bit of play, but it's no different from a Laplander I've abused in the same way. I'd say performance is on par with the Laplander no better, no worse. But the opinel is more expensive, for that you seem to get a wood handle and satin finish blade made from 12c27 I believe. Both saws have replaceable blades and lock open (the opinel doesn't lock closed).

Thanks west.. That is the saw I am asking about.. Seems it weighs next to nothing and that what piqued my interest!! John

Yeah it is light weight. That's a plus. I got mine mainly for aesthetic reasons. Looks better when paired with a hatchet and bushcraft style knife., with its wood and satin blade. If you don't mind the cost I'd say go for it. IMO, it is a quality product like you would expect from the Opinel brand.

I've got both of them, both cut really nice- equivalent to a Silky- very similar tooth setup and cuts on the pull stroke like a Silky- I have a larger Silky for bigger jobs, but the Opinels are chosen when weight is a priority

I have an Opinel No.18 that I used as my pack saw last hunting season. It is noticeably lighter than the Silky Saw Gomboy 240 I had been using and found that it performed admirably but not quite at the level of the Silky IMO. The Gomboy 240 blade is about 1" longer and is about 10.5oz vs 6.5oz for the No.18. Given the moderate amount of sawing I did last season the weight savings of the Opinel gave it an overall advantage. For my particular needs I'm thinking that a more ideal setup might be the Silky Super Accel, which is closer in size and weight to the No.18, with 2 blades (large tooth for wood & fine tooth for bone).
