I have read from you guys that the Opinels are really good users, so I bought one, and now find I can hardly rotate the locking ring. Is there a trick to rotating the ring?

It should work just fine. Try applying some light oil underneath the rotating cap.

Remember, these are cheap knives and you may have got a friday-afternoon sample. I've never had trouble with mine - don't own any currently though.

Just turn the bugger. I guess one trick is to push on the open side of the lock as you turn it, this way you are not squeezing it and trying to turn it at the same time.

If it is a small opinel it may not even have a lock.

Locking rings start at No.6 and go up from there, IIRC. I've picked up a couple of them and the rings are a little stiff initially. I loosened them up by taking a pair of needlenose pliers and opening it up a bit.

Sometimes the handle (wood) swelling might affect the action (opening/closing and locking/unlocking).

Noticed it when I went to S.F. for a while.

Ya just gotta use it. Then itll get a bit looser, but it will never really be loose enough for one hand opening.
