Hi all. Just a question here. I have a used Opinel #10 with a broken locking ring (cracked and does not turn smoothly).

There is a crack by the pin.

Opinel USA will send me another for free if I order another knife (I checked, and they responded quickly in the affirmative).

I thought, before going that route, I might ask here if anyone had a spare.

So, I was wondering if anyone had changed their #10 over to friction folder only, and had an extra locking ring?

The problem with that, since Opinel knives have no backsprings they will open in your pocket. :)

Not if you peen the pivot a bit more snug. When I made the decision to use my Opinel's as strait up friction folders, I gave the rivet a couple of taps with a hammer, and it's nice and snug now.

Order another knife, get one for free, and test if you're the "all free (strong) friction type" or the "lock ring type". It seems to be a "win - win" solution...

I intend to eventually order more, but just spent some knife money, and the wife is not as keen with the idea of spending more money to get a free locking ring! (Eventually, I want to order the Ebony #8, but not right now).

I am the locking ring type. I have 5 Opinel, and really appreciate the locking ring.

The locking ring number 8 in ebony is an incredible treat... I'm sorry for aggravating, but this a fact !

I've been trying to get a #8 locking ring for years. As you likely found, Opinel will not sell parts.

I got a #8 without a ring some years ago and rigged up a homemade one.

I've used the knife a lot and it has a lanyard my daughter made when she was little on it. It won't lock closed with my homemade ring and I'd like to make it more perfect. I've e-mailed Opinel USA twice and started two threads weaseling around for one over the years. Seems all the people who go friction folder still want to keep the ring around for a backup. Can't say I blame them.
