Opinel locks

No, the Opinel collar doesn't lock in the closed position....
But they don't seem inclined to open of their own accord so maybe it doesn't matter.

edit... just seen the post above - my No.8 is an old one, perhaps they've changed.

From pictures seen of the Marjacq I think the work the same. You lock and unlock a Opinel by twisting the (lock-)ring. The principal is the same but it might be a lil differed after all.

All Opinel’s above the no.5 have a lock-ring and it are good cutters.

The newer Opinels with the locking rings do twist to lock the blade closed. It's a relatively recent change though; only a few years ago they did not. Imagine such an important improvement made to a product after a hundred years... You'd think someone would have though of that sooner. :)

Mind you, locking collar or not, Opinels in wood(as opposed to the bone ones)usually have a very snug fit.Not much risk of accidental opening, in fact you often have to tap them a bit before you can open them. A fine all round cheap&simple knife though:thumbup:

Yep, my Opinel No.8 locks closed and open.

Do not hand a closed locked Opinel to someone who has never seen an Opinel before. They will tug on the nail nick until the damn thing opens without bothering to unlock it.

I'm laughing alone here. That is SO true. Since that guy tried too hard and the ring got on the other side of the room, I always check the people who are opening it. Fortunately, the ring is easy to put back.

=> If you have to use strength to open/close a knife, you do it the wrong way! :p

To get back to the original question, it does lock, but don't treat it as a hard locking mechanism.

I like Opinels.
