I have 5 Opinels, this is what it took to get the right one for me.
08 - a bit too big.
06 - a bit too small.
Then I hit on the 07, this is the right one. Not too big in the pocket, but large enough to cut most of what I want. The thin blade really cuts wood.;)
No, the Opinel is not the "do all" for me, but is quite a performer.

To make it "my" knife. Changed the blade profile to a drop point.

Grind a dip in the handle to "pinch" the blade out.

Put a piece of cork in the handle to keep blade from hitting the handle when parked.

Also, just noticed the little boss in the ring lock.

Bladeforums' Three Little Bears. This one's juuuuust right!

Forgive the nursery rhyme analogy. I am currently watching my <2 year old play in his cousin's giant room o' toys.

Sweet Opinel mods!

The No7 is a nice size. I have a couple. The newer one is a work in progress. I have ground off the nub that limits rotation of the lock ring, and added a ramp so that I can lock it open in either direction. The blade has been filed to a drop point, but the profile is not quite where I want it. The knife is perfectly serviceable now, but I still want to slim the handle for pocket carry.

The other is one of my oldest Opinels. My first Opinel was a No.7. This one might be it, but I can’t be sure. I just know that it is old enough to have a carbon steel lock ring and bolster. Since it is a bit of a relic I have left it unmolested.

I don't have any bump ones, mine are pre-bump, but I do have a few sizes. As you say, you can really find the one that works best, then make it better.
