I just got opinel6 in carbon steel and it came dull ,but after few swipes on sharpmaker it became hair whittling straight razor. It is new version with that notch on locking ring, and the locking is not bad at all.The carbon model is thinner and i like thin blades because they slice better.I would like to find a knife that cuts better than these thin carbon and stainless opinels. For this price theyre excellent, not perfect but for cutting are one of best.

Good choice. Opinel No.6 Carbone is the most pocket-friendly Opinel that is still big enough to be useful. It is also the smallest one with the lock ring. The 5 might suit me fine, but I have not come across one.

I almost always carry one of these two. The handles have both been slimmed to make them less noticeable in the pocket, one by sanding with 80 grit, the other by application of my Seahorse Whittler.

Mine both have the older lock ring system, which I prefer. The new one works fine, but I am in the habit of turning the ring in the now-forbidden direction. It is not hard to modify with a Dremel and a sharp file.

New locking system is fine,6 is pocket friendly and ill edc it.Im also getting 8 in carbon.Have old worn out 6in carbon,8 garden knife in stainless,8,9,10 in stainless. All in all theyre excellent cutters made to be used and inexpensive.I wish they made regular opinels in plastic handles, and also stainless of the same stock as carbon.I think their stainless is little better than carbon for all around use.Gets scary sharp and easy to sharpen, doesnt rust and gets really nice toothy edge. This stainless performs same as carbon without rusting.I use knives to cut fruits and vegetables so rust resistance is important to me.Ill use carbon in n America and stainless down south where juices from exotic fruits easily rust carbon steel if you dont wipe it off right away. That said victorinox worx perfectly well when i go on long road trips.Softer knives are way more useful to me than super hard super steels that need more time spent sharpening and often special equipment. What i saw everywhere on my road trips were softer tempered knives that can be sharpened on rock, file ,simple ceramics and basic stones. These knives can be touched up with few swipes and thats what people that use knives every day prefer.A lot of people that i know prefer softer butcher style knives for any tasks including camping that are easily sharpened and touched up on steel or stone.
