When I looked at the SpydieSaw, I said, Okay, one hand opening, Spyderco quality, and AUS 6 steel?!?!?!?!?! What's up with that?
Then I took a look at the Opinel saw, and I saw that it's half price and it uses carbon steel, tool steel, so I bought 2 of them.
I don't know how important hardness or strength of steel is on a saw, but I figured that's why they call High Carbon - Tool Steel, so it would be better on a saw, right?
So did I do the right thing? Opinions, please.

What are the specs on the steel in the saws you bought? D2 ? M2? What kind of heattreat?
Remember, the heattreat is just as important as the steel. Aus6 by Spyderco is good stuff.. Personally, I use a Wyoming saw with throwaway blades. You can put in wood cutting blades or whatever. Carries in a sheath when broken down.
Also, Puma makes a great little folder called the GameWarden, but you have to order 'em from Germany to get the saw version. It's got a PE main blade & a saw. Works great. My friend just skinned & quartered 2 Moose with his up in BC Canada.

im gonna bet with the opinel

good high carbon steel, theyve made knives with it for a long time.

also, theyre cheap so if it does mess up, you can reaplace it.

Opinel advertises their steel as "au carbone".
I don't think they use great steel, but, (I think) all other things being equal it's better, I can't read French, but I'll take a look at the site and get back to this thread.

I'm sure they will saw stuff up very nicely thank you very much :)
My concern when getting a saw was what happens when it gets dull & I'm miles from nowhere.
So I got one with throw away blades. They're small, easily packable & very good cutters.
Your solution of buying 2 seems to be trying to head off the same problem, no?
Mine's very good at lopping steaks off of frozen Elk & Cougar meat.

slices
1) I don't go in the deep outdoors much
2) saws aren't quite like knives, I mean they're still quite functional a good time after they loose their sharpness, right?
3) It's much easier to tell when you're saw is getting dull, at least for me anyway, if it cuts quickly, you're good, if it cuts slowly, at least you're still cutting.

I think the Spyderco steel may be for corrosion resistance, a problem with saws cutting branches heavy with water and sap and resin and other similar gunk.

Anyway, I've used the Opinels and I like them. It's hard to dull a saw when you're just using it for small stuff :D

Opinel uses a plain .9% carbon steel for their knives, I’m not sure if they use the same steel for their saws.

hehehehehe mon ami!
if you have some troubles about reading french just tell me I'll help you out of this situation!
:D
Actualy opinel's steel is of quiet good quality, the only thing with them is that they very fast take this oxydation color on the blade so keep it "oiled"!
their folder knife can be sharpen like razor blades, their very effective and you won't cry when loosing it!
Plus it's a piece of history! think! one of france's oldest knife design!;)
