is this knife as good as it has been made out to be? I was recently watching a gavkoo video and he was talking about opinel knives, i was intrigued and so i found this one...it looks cool but is it a good quality knife?

You will find a lot of Opinel fans here. They don't use the latest greatest steels (stainless is 12C27, and the carbon steel they use is XC90, which is similar to 1080 or 1095). And the construction is not the strongest. But what they have going for them are a few things:

1. Outstanding blade geometry for cutting. Not something to use for punching through car doors or chopping down trees, but as a cutting tool they are very hard to beat.

2. Very reasonably priced, making them a great value.

Although I have knives with all kinds of fancy steels - CPM-M4, CTS-20CP, S90V, Super Blue, ZDP-189, etc - the knife I use more than any other is my Opinel #8 stainless. They just plain cut.

Yes and yes. Opinel knives occupy a niche in the knife spectrum that no one else can touch. They are well made (although you may have to put an edge on it), tough and a great value. Everyone should have at least one.

There very good! And thank you unk I had no idea how to pronounce opinel....
