Anyone who's seen my posts know I've been on a new, serious knife to add to my collection for cheap, and after considering joining SpyderNation and Order of the KAI I've decided to AT LEAST go with my first Opinel (Order of the Opie?) I chose it because members here have said that the quality/craftsmanship is impeccable and they don't look hostile(even quite dressy!)to average person. But as I'll be traveling to my favorite store, I noticed that on their site that they don't say "Opinel No. 8 directly, they say things like "Opinel 4 3/8 VRN8" or something or other, can anyone make sense which is the No. 8?

They're using the actual part number. VRN8 is the Number 8. The "4 3/8" refers to the closed length.

Thanks so much! Maybe there needs to be an Opinel fanbase here like SpyderNation, though half the forum would be in it!

The order of Opie, I like that. You're younger, but many here will remember the Andy Griffin show and Opie Taylor (his son) on the show, so the name is catchy.

I bought a friend of mine one of the No 8 slimline knives in olive wood.

If you're looking for a nice Opinel , I can tell you it's a beauty.

Overly sensitive because I'm carrying my USA made Old Timer 5OT today, but I hope I never see the names Opinel and Taylor associated in a sentence again! Grrr.

That's funny. Yeah, the Taylor Cutlery Schrades aren't like the old ones!

I found a USA Schrade in a crime scene house. I tossed the leather belt pouch sheath since it had human blood on it, but the knife was essentially brand new.

Opinels are measured in centimeters. So the number is the closed length of the knife in cm.

I don't know where you live, but some states/cities prohibit locking knives--and the Opi is a locking knife. If that's the case where you live, you can easily remove the locking ring and leave it at home.

I have an Opi 8 and LOVE it!

I live in Tennessee and I'm 99% sure it's legal

That would seem to make some sense, for an approximation of the blade length. My No. 08's blade is 8.3cm / 3.25" long, measured from junction of handle to the tip. The closed length of it is 11cm (4-3/8"). Might be a close call, in areas with a 3" blade length limit.

The numbers have nothing to do with blade or closed lengths in cm, they were just consecutive numbers used for the models with increasing sizes (the No.1 and No.11 were discontinued a long time ago).

I think this misconception is due to the fact that the No 9, No. 10 and No. 12 have respectively 9 cm, 10 cm and 12 cm blades by a co-incidence.

This is certainly true, I believed the number idea until I bought a #6, measured it, then looked it up in the size chart.
