I moved to the Denver area from Austin this past May and I'm still trying to find time (and funding) to visit all the knife retailers in my area.

Today, I visited Sportsman's Warehouse (a chain I'd never encountered in Texas) and was astounded to find an Opinel, marketed by Coghlan's Ltd., for $8.99 (plus tax).

A photo of the same style knife I purchased can be found here:

Note that the gear-up.com listing states the blade is 3.5"; this must be another Opinel model because I measured mine twice and the blade is 2.75" (knife is about 3" closed). I've owned two or three Opinels in the past and this one I purchased today is the real deal (or a brilliant forgery). I know Opinels can be had pretty cheaply, but I've *never* seen one in a store before and it was a thrill to be able to rip apart the packaging right in the packing lot! :p

Sounds like what you have is an Opinel No. 6. The other listing you probably saw is for a No. 8. You can tell by looking at the locking ring, it should be printed right there.

Good work finding those, the only place in Lansing that has 'em is Williams-Sonoma, they only have No. 8's, and they want twelve bucks for 'em!:(
