So I ordered an opinel #8 the other day to see with all the hype was about. When I opened the package today the first thing I did was try to cut a piece of paper to see how sharp my new knife was.. well more like see how good it is a ripping paper. The knife has absolutely no edge of any sort(and you can correct my vocabulary cause I'm somewhat new to knives but the knife has to secondary edge grind at all). Is this normal or did I get a bad one???
Thanks

This doesnt sound normal, seems like you got one that slipped through quality control.

I only have two Opinels: a Carbon #6 and a stainless #7. Both came with almost no discernible secondary bevel. Just take the stones to it and you'll be good to go! Should sharpen up quickly and easily...

That's unusual for sure; they normally come rather sharp out of the box. Your dealer should be happy to replace it with another.

If you're uncertain with the vocabulary terms, a good close-up picture will get the point across.

I bought one that I cannot see a secondary bevel on. It's still one of the sharpest knives I ever bought. That's what a good convex edge can do for you.

I got two at a camping store. Little skinny handled #6's. Neither was shaving sharp out of the package, which was perfect for me.

I bought one for my 7 year old.

I took mine and did a few passes per side on a stone, and then ceramic stick. Hair jumping sharp.

Easiest sharpening knife I have ever had, because the primary grind down to the edge was so thin.

They were $11, with no shipping, so I was more than satisfied!

Sorry about the POS camera.

And its like a butter knife

The only one I ever bought came with no edge on it at all. You could have used it for a butter knife but that is all.

It is unusual but can happen...mainly because of human errors on the production line..

My no. 8 came so-so sharp, not hair shaving sharp or phone book paper cutting sharp by any means. It's so cheap it didn't bother me though. I have virtually no sharpening skills and even I was able to bring it to a ridiculously sharp edge. I love the thing. It sits proudly next to my Sebenza, and often makes me question the point of buying any knife over $10.

I recently bought a no. 9 that looks like the sharpening was started, then the coffee break bell sounded. I just have to find the time to finish the job.

Same thing with an Old Hickory 7" butcher. Part of the inexpensive knife expererience, I suppose.

Inexpensive and not from china. I'm sure the french get paid more than them so they have to make up the difference somewhere and I guess its in quality control.

Opinel's generally come with a the belly/tip portion of the knife unsharpened

Yikes, another reason (aesthetics being primary) I would never buy an opinel. I buy plenty of things that are not sharp, knives are NOT one of them.

A knife with no edge is as useful as a shoe with no sole.

it takes maybe 5 minutes to sharpen.

They respond well to stropping. Also, with the thin blades, they cut well even when slightly sharp.
