Since she likes to cook, she has to be able to slice. Get an Opinel; probably the #8 which I think is most purchased. The number is the number of centimeters, so 8 cm = 3.15 inches. They are cheap; everybody raves about them; you can buy fancy ones if you prefer with good wood, etc. But they are French and seem to be the King around here for cooks.
