Linerlock? I just got a Mini Cyclone TiZDP framelock and love the blade shape, and knife ergo's. Now I've got an itch to get the Blur SG2 but I'm a little hesitant, due to the liner lock. I saw you did a Framelock for the Blur and was wondering if the framelock is that much superior to Kershaws liner lock? Also using the knife moderately, as part of an EDC rotation, how do you see the longevity of the liner lock? I do intend to use the knife for work, construction, and will be used for light to moderate duty.

Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave. Thanks for stopping by.

I've seen several liner locking folding knives from Kershaw in the last year that struck me as very very well built tought users. To name a few of the stand outs, the Zero Tolerance 0200 and 0400, the Kerhsaw JunkYardDog II, the NRG, and the Blur among others. Kershaws liner locks are my favorite among the manufacturers and I'll tell you right now the primary reason is because of the contact angle or pitch angle of the contact interface for the lock to meet the blade. The angle they use compared to other companies is not as steep and in my opinion its a stand out for better more reliable function here due to this reason. All their knives had one thing in common. Strong locks, reliable contacts and great contact angles combined with stainless steel liner locks of hardened steel that in use wore better than similar titanium locks I've also tested from other manufacturers knives. The liner lock on the Blur surprised me at how good it was and how much stress it could take.

I personally did the frame lock just to see if I could do it for one, but also to see if I could do it and still make the torsion spring work as well as the fact that I just happen to like frame locks over liner locks. Now on some like the JunkYardDog II or the ZeroTolerance knives I mentioned or even the NRG they struck me as fine as they were. I still think Tim Galyean's JunkYardDogII design is one of Kershaw's best offerings. Love that knife! But there are things I like better about the Blur. One being the color, two the fact that it has a thumb stud which I really like a lot but also its a non flipper and I'm not completely sold on the flipper by itself. I tolerate it with the JYDII but find myself wishing it had both a stud and a flipper.

The SG2 Blur is probably my overall favorite folder I have seen from Kershaw. The handle is comfortable, the lock is reliable and the blade in SG2 is a super performer. For the uses you describe I have no doubt that the knife as shipped from Kershaw will more than meet your needs head on and with no problems at all and no need for modification or a new lock. I tested the SG2 Blur that Thomas Welk sent me quite thouroughly and wrote a rather lengthy review on it in the knife reivew forum shortly after recieving it. The lock is quite good in my opinion as I've come to learn about most all of Kershaw's liner locks. Later I bought another for myself because I was so impressed with it. Until recently I had the two but I did sell the frame lock I made.

STR,

Thanks for your opinion about the Blur, I've been on the fence for a week or 2, and after reading your response, I'll likely buy the SG2 before their all gone.
I'm not a huge fan of the flipper either, my thinking is that it will be a legality issue down the road, I prefer the Spydie hole or thumbstuds. This is not saying I don't play with the flipper on my Mini Cyclone...lol. When I'm out in sheeple land I switch it off.
Anyways thanks again for the reply..

Dave
