opinion on "cold steel" spike

The Barry Dawson custom version isn't very expensive for a custom. It's certainly more than the CS, but I don't really like CS's hype and rhetoric.

I maybe one of the lucky ones and got a good one. The edge held a great edge and is wicked sharp. It was hairing popping out of the box.

Like i said i might have just been lucky.

Not suprised you got a good one, CS's products are usually pretty solid and many are made by the same manufacturers that make some Spyderco's, AG Russell's, SOG's & many others.

Any way, I have the hawkbill version that I use as a desk knife. For it's intended purpose (Self defense) it's a great knife, it also makes a great desk knife. Zero ground edge, razor sharp and after almost 2 years of cutting open envelopes it's still as sharp as the day I got it. Grinds are perfect, cord wrap is tight and has held up.

Not much more you can ask for in a $20 knife.

I tried to find a link of Barry's custom version for you, but it appears as though his webpage is being worked on. Here is the site, if you're interested, I'm sure Barry can send you pics of his spike. His email address is on this page:

yep I got one too. I keep mine in the top compartment of my shooting box, perfect fit. Count me in as one who thinks this is a solid (one piece) and well made knife for @ $20...
IMO Cold Steel makes some great stuff in the < $50 price range and the anti-CS rhetoric can be a bit annoying at times too.

A sharpened ice pick if you will. Nice weight and length and lightning fast. Would'nt use it much as a work horse in the field, but for what it was designed for it will definitely serve it's purpose.

I, too, purchased a couple of them (a "talon" and a "tanto") out of curiosity. Both seemed well made and effective probes, picks, miniature pry bars, and (I supposed) self defense weapons. Neither, however, had what I would consider a sharp cutting edge. I figured they weren't supposed to.
