meh....don't really care for them but I've never had a combo edge knife not perform pretty much the same as standard edge. For me it's more of an aesthetics thing I guess.

I've carried one with a 3.75 blade and found it very useful in all kinds of tasks. Sawing through various materials was easier than cutting with the plain blade. With that being said my new and much larger knife does not have a combo blade so I will see how it performs in the next month against my old one.

They stink!

They add no cutting ability, and are nigh impossible to sharpen in the field. A properly sharpened plain edge works far better.

I never liked them either but I sent a defect back with a strait edge and they sent a combo edge so i wonder why the even really make combo edges

I don't like them. I can do almost if not everything with a straight edge that I can do with a combo edge.

As much as it might be a pain in the butt, send the knife back again, and make them replace it properly. If they sent you a combo edged knife as a replacement for a plain edged model, then they sent you the incorrect replacement. And yes, combo edges offer no advantage in my opinion.

Not my favorite choice but I do keep one in my CERT bag. Serrated is good for cutting through straps/cordage and zip ties.

I prefer a plain edge for 99% of my cutting needs, and if a job calls for serrations I'd rather have a fully serrated blade rather than a combo edge.

Never liked em, I prefer straight edges. I keep a knife with a combo edge on my BOB, but dont use it otherwise

In my opinion they're the worst of both worlds. Not enough of either type of edge to be overly useful.

Have yet to find a situation where a combo edge, or even a full serrated edge was better than a sutiably sharpened plain edge. by that I mean if the task/knife requires some tooth the blade gets it, if it requires a polished edge it gets that.

They can be useful to start a cut in tough or hard items, like plastic or synthetic straps where a plain edge skips off. And having the plain edge tip can be used for fine cuts. So even an short blade can gain some utility with a combo edge.

For about a year I used a combo Spyderco Military at work(I'm an electrician). I loved the knife for work. The size of the blade gave me plenty of plain edge for stripping wire and the serrated portion is great for cutting dirty rope, jet line, cardboard, etc. Unfortunately the knife needs to be sent to Spyderco for some TLC. The detent ball either sheared off or fell out so there isn't any closed retention and I don't feel comfortable carrying it. If the knife was still operational I would still be using it every day. Before I bought the knife I thought combo edges were silly but now I am sold. For regular EDC duty I carry a plain edge blade and keep a serrated knife handy in my car or back pack. In my situation I find myself cutting things repeatedly that would wreck a plain edge and I find that the serrated edge can handle cutting things like dirty rope all day without going dull. Most people probably won't find a combo or serrated edge more useful that a plain edge but I know that for me they work great.
