Hey guys. I was just flippin a coin over whether to get the CRKT point guard or one of the m16 series.

What do yous think?

I've owned both and the handle shape of the PG is much more comfortable and secure for me than the M16, though the cutouts in the scales and clip of the PG dug into my hand when gripped hard. Overall, other than the cutouts, I really like the shape of the PG, which could be why I often carry an Ares now. I think the M16 felt a little bit sturdier. If you can handle both that should make your decision much easier, as they have very different feels. You might also want to look at the new M18 series - like the M16's, but with a better blade steel, LAWKS, & G-10 handle inserts. Were I to buy another CRKT it would probably be one of the M18's.

Edited to add - both the M16 & the M18 have the flipper, which has got to be one of the 10 best inventions in the history of the pocket knife.

if ur up for security then its for the point guard as it has the LAWKS safety feature which means u get a double lock up. if the liner were to fail u get the other lock preventing the blade froms closing in on u. in the case of the m16 if the liner were to fail u get the flipper protecting ur fingers. as regard to openings, the m16 is super eaasy to open thanks to the flipper, however the point guard is not that far behind as a quick flick of the thumd to the thumb disk will cause the blade to be open smoothly and quickly. the m16 in aluminium has a better blade steel aus8 as compared to the aus 6m on the point guard. the m16 zytel has the same blade steel as the point guard. both knives are comfortable to hold in reverse or sabre grip. both feel solid in my hands. if u can i suggest that u feel both in ur hands and get the one that u feel has the better contour for urself. if u can get both and rotate them. their both value for the money and a bang for the buck. just for a little extra info the m16 is available in tanto if u like that. btw the tanto is not grounded only on one side like emersons knives (just useing them for comparison, no pund intended). if u want to know more abt their specs check out www.crkt.com or www.1sks.com. everything u need to know abt the knives specs can be found there

I've heard of the flipper mentioned, but I'm not really sure how it operates. Any explanation would be welcome.

...and i'm on the fence about either picking up an m16 or an m18. i'm a really big fan of the PG shape, though i will say that flitz will become a part of your life. i had rust spots a lot sooner than i expected, but no biggy: i knew what i was getting into. personally, the only thing i'm still trying to figure out is if the weight save of carbon fiber is worth the trade off for lawks and blade shape.

good luck with your decision,

steve

Hello Tom, the "flipper" on the M-16 is an integral part of the blade which acts as a guard when the blade is open. When the knife is in the close position, the "flipper" extends out of the top of the handle so you can use your forefinger to flip the blade open without using the thumbstuds.

Chris-T, I like the Point Guard, but I'm partial to the large aluminium M-16 Tanto mainly because of it's construction and AUS-8 steel. The LAWKS feature on the Point Guard is great, but I'd wait until the M-18 comes out and get one.
