REI is selling a stone called smith's diamond sharpening stone for $20....it has course on one side and fine on the other side....all for $20....i've found REI to be pretty reliable on providing equipment they have pre tested before

what do you think of this?

Are there any other products that have a dual sided diamond stone for under say $30?

thanks, Bill

ps....how do you pronounce "Busse"?

The only problem I've had with this hone is that the little divots that are in the surface to hold lubricant(water) allows you to shave off the substrate on the edges which the diamonds are imbedded in.

For a packable hone, (if your careful) it's a great product for $20 also it's convienent the way it pops into it's own handle.

thanks for the reply....could you explain a little more clearly to me (noob) what you mean by careful sharpening....

how should i sharpen more carefully?

I don't have any experience of the Smith's diamond sharpening stone -
but I hope some of my comments on diamond hones might be useful to you.

I use the Eze-Lap 1" x 6" Fine Grit (600) Diamond Stone as my regular flat "stone"/hone.

Diamond hones (at least the EZE-lap ones) cut and remove material fast -
so much so that I avoid using coarse (and even medium) grits -
as I find they are really rough and mess up the surface of the bevel.

I find (for my usage) even the fine grit will remove steels PDQ -
and if I'm not careful I'll grind away much more than I intended -
even on hard "premium" steels.

I don't have but like the looks of the Eze-Lap 2" x 3-1/4" Fine Grit (600) Credit Card Diamond Stone
and might even consider the Super Fine Grit (1200)

Although the DMT versions - DMT Fine 600-Mesh 3.25"x2"x.05" Dia-Sharp (and Extra-fine 1200-Mesh)
look very similar, and are often just a bit cheaper.......

I don´t know about this hone but I have a Smith´s diamond steel that slides in and out of its handle held by a simple chuck, I like it, works well, is very portable and wasn´t expensive, it´s about a medium grit.

Edited to add:

Perhaps I should mention, I´ve also used EZE-lap and DMT diamond hones and find them good too.
