Opinion...Spyderco Needs an EDC Friendly Auto

I'll admit off the top, I really want to own a Citadel, but I will not pay $500 for one (recent exchange prices range even higher)! That said, I really wish Spyderco would either a) reissue the Embassy/Citadel line or b) develop a new EDC/light tactical auto. The Autonomy is a cool knife, but it is also highly specialized and not the most pocket friendly given its large size and kind of ungainly shape. Also, it's blade shape isn't the most versatile, it is designed for a purpose and I'm sure does it well but it does not suit my needs...the Embassy and Citadel were much more general use oriented, I would love to see a knife like this back on the market.

With the trend of auto legality definitely being a favorable one (Texas, Tennessee etc in the last few years) the market for autos has definitely been expanded. Kershaw has obviously seen this and acted on it with the introduction of the (very popular) Launch series. We obviously don't know how they performed in terms of sales, but it seems to me that a knife like the Embassy or Citadel would do well in today's market, I know I would buy one.

Sal, please bring back an EDC friendly auto!

With all the restrictions the Feds place on Spyderco's sale of automatics, I doubt it's going to happen. If it did, it would be like everything else, namely that lots of people would want one, but each person would want it their way. "A" would want a 3" blade, "B" would consider anything under 4" a toy, and so on and so on. Heck, I'm not that much different, I'd buy just about any auto Spyderco turned out, but I'd only be interested in carrying it on a regular basis if it was a DE/DA OTF.

Truth is, if you want to carry an auto and can legally do so, there are plenty of them out there. These days I generally carry a MT OTF along with my Spydercos. If you're not into OTFs, or just want something less expensive, the Boker Kalashnakovs are worth a look.

EDITED TO ADD: FWIW, the Autonomy isn't significantly larger than the large Citadel, or the Stretch. I'd jump on one with an uncoated, PE, S30V or S35VN blade in a heartbeat.

I'm perfectly fine with Spyderco NOT doing this. Leave the autos to companies whose lineup has consistently included them. Just my opinion.

IF... Spyderco makes this kind of auto, it will be fantastic.
I think a 3" blade is preferred by many, Mr. Paul.

Agreed. I think most Spyderco knives deploy just as fast as most automatics and assisted openers on the market.

I wanted an auto real bad in 1999 and 2000. I remember covert customs in Montana and Aspen Colorado. Bolster concealed autos in the mid 90s. The Halo Microtech was crazy awesome in 2000.
An autonomy would be cool, but any Spyderco since 1980 is just as fast.

I'd like a Spyderco switchblade too. I EDCed an Autonomy for a while , serrated sheepsfoot blades aren't really a wise choice for a guy carrying only one knife. I shifted back to my Spyderco Delica , which l carry every day except Sunday when l carry A Filipino Handmade balisong.
