Opinion on the Cabelas stag handled bowies? GOOD, BAD, MORE DISPLAY THEN WORK

These knives are cut out and ground from old saw blades or from saw blade stock. They have not been heat treated after being cut out, at least it does not say they have and it mentions preserving the natural temper:eek: . They look pretty and may work just fine. If you are looking for a real cutter i would stick with someone who really heat treats their material. I have seen what I beleive is called Silver Stag. It looks very similar anyway. The fit and finish on them is not impressive, but then how much is a good fit and quality finish on a properly heat treated knife worth. it's up to the individual. Cabelas has a great return policy. If you do buy one and don't like it send it back. If you like it and feel it is a good value for the buck then let us know too.

Don't know what hardness these saw blades have, but it seems to me it might be fine for larger knives. If they cut it by waterjet, there wouldn't be heat affected zones so it should be fine at the edge. Of course you still have the big questions about what conditions the material endured while living as a saw blade, but that's pretty much the same as with using any recycled material (which is one of the reasons why I don't use it).

Like AC says, you could get one and just return it if you don't like it.

The knives you speak of are from the shop of Ken Richardson, here in the Ozarks. They live locally, and are close personal friends. I've been selling their knives for about 15 years and even done several collaborations, so to speak, and can answer most questions concerning them.

They were originally made from old saw blades. but those won't keep up with the shop's demands these days.
They had Admiral analyze some old saw blades, and they came up with 1085, which Admiral runs just for them. It is shipped to them, prehardened, in big rolls.
The shop makes about 100 knives per day, and can't even begin to keep up with the orders it gets.
As a matter of fact, Silver Stag originated from someone just like me that got tired of trying to get what they needed from Ken's shop.lol
It helps being local with them, but it's still sometimes like pulling teeth.lol

I keep some in-stock, and typically pick up a monthly order from them.

Another advantage I have over most retailers, is being able to get most anything carved or scrimmed on them.

I was at Gander Mountain today and they had a whole line of Silver Stag brand knives. Like he said they were a little bit sloppy looking in the fit and finish but are good classic designs for a very reasonable price.

Based on that it sounds like both companies make good stuff for the cost.
