I'm going to try and purchase a wood handled 15" Sirupati. Any opinions on the best maker or Kami to request?

i think kumar and bura are the best for me...

Bura is what many consider to be the "benchmark" of what a khuk should be.

i like kumar though. Kumar makes very comfortable handles bcs they ar ea little bit fatter around..... and rounder at the bottom than bura's.

however i will say that all my khuks are done by bura or kumar. I also know that Sher is known making heavier knives... so is the exclamation mark kami.

i recomend Kumar or Bura

Tell UB what you want to use it for and ask what he would recommend.

The good and bad is that every khuk is different.
Each kami has a personal style and flavor,
but even that can vary with the direction of the wind.

The next shipment most often contains a few surprises.

Get a Bureti (Bura Reti Khukuri) if you see one offered again.
It's in the size range, and the style range of the Siru/Kobra15"18".

Watch for the forum deals.
You get to -see- the khuk with a short discription.
My most favorite way to buy khuks.

Without doubt, without hesitation, and without reservation, BURA! He puts things in a blade that the eye can't perceive, but the hand and the heart can, take my word on that.

Sarge

I agree whole heartedly. You just can't go wrong with Bura. He is my personal favorite. Next is Sher.

Another $.02 worth. :)

...But never got an answer...

What's the difference between a BAS and a 15" Siru? They seem to look quite similar according to the Khuk Dynamics in the FAQ...

I want similarities, differences, cosmetic and/or otherwise please.

The reason why I ask is because my next khuk purchases will be a pair of BAS's one for a friend of mine that wants a "Gurkha Knife"...

Go for BAS's. 15" Sirupati is like 2/3rds vertical depth of BAS. Think of kobra shape but made full thickness. Best I can do before my coffee

My three khuks are by Bura and Kumar, both do excellent work. The 15in Siru is on my wish list along with the 16.5 WW2 and the M43/Hanshee.

BAS vs Sirupati?

probably weight distribution in the hand would be most conspicuous, but the profiles are (as you've seen) markedly different. One format might appeal to a person based solely on that person's sense of what it "should" look like.

Functionality would be next on my list...the BAS is more utilitarian, the Siru more dedicated of a weapon, IMO.

I have Bura, Shankar, and Amtrak...blades... Each is a marvelous tool. The quality control at HI is so rigorous, I can't imagine a bad product getting through.

Enjoy.

I like siupatis. I have them by Bura, Kumar, Amtrack, and Sher. I think Dean has the right idea, though. Check the daily deals Uncle puts up with pics. Sooner or later one will call you.
