Anybody have any experience with this knife in M2 steel? Other opinions welcome along with other knife suggestions for a fixed blade with a blade length between 4.5-5". I don't want a Swamp Rat model, I want a sharper point then the rat models.:)

You might want a Swamp Rat model. The new Rat Tail midtech they're doing with Wally Hayes(sp?) is pretty sweet looking.

The 140HS is a good light-duty outdoors knife. It's light, has a neutral balance, and cuts well due to its flat sabre grind (other grinds, such as full-flat or convex may cut better). Handle is very secure and, if you don't use your thumb on its spine, very comfortable. Of course, the spine ridges are there to keep the knife in your hand, so their lack of snuggliness is a welcome tradeoff. Benchmade's M2 is very hard and tough compared to their 154CM and will hold an edge when the 154CM will blunt and will hold an edge or blunt when the 154CM will start chipping out (very small chips, mind you).

M2 can rust, so, if you use it on food, be sure to coat the edge in mineral oil or even non-stick cooking spray. If it won't touch food, most any oil will be good.

Less pointy knives, such as those from Fehrman Knives, Becker Knife and Tool, Swamp Rat Knife Works, Cold Steel, Busse Combat, and many others may serve general outdoors and survival needs better.

I like my 140HSSR, but it's pretty thin and light for general outdoors use. It's biased towards concealment/tactical use IMO, although it cuts like the devil and holds an edge well.

The SRK Bandicoot is pretty pointy, and a tough as nails fixed blade.

Fallkniven S1 maybe?

Also, the Kabar D2 Impact is a tough fixed blade, similar to the 140HS but a bit more utility oriented IMO.

It shouldn´t be hard o get a Bandicoot pointier. You may ask a prof. grinder for this. If you choose professional help, hink about regrinding that thick "convex" edge. But the Bandcoot is a bit small in width. I mean you cut best holding the knife near the edge. The 140 is better thought out.

I agree, the 140 looks thin. I really think it´s too thin. But, i asked BM about this and recieved a harsh answer:D . It doen´t matter, guess i scratched the knifemakers pride:D :D . They told me, if i´m in need of a prybar, i should look around my local tool store, but if i´m looking for an awsome knife, i should go with the 140....

The 145 is a bit better ballanced IMO. BTW the Bandicoot is a bit too thick for a knife in that size. Less would performe aswell.

Welp, I went ahead and ordered the 140HS Nimravus. Got it for $103 and I'm sure I'll like it. I don't plan on using it as a heavy use outdooring blade, but as a general utiliy and hiking knife. If I want to chop bone and brush I'll just bring a HI Khukri along. :)
