I would like opinions of what would be "quicker" everything being equal. A 20" Gelbu Special or 20" Kumar Kobra. I have a 21" Sirupati and it isn't any quicker than my 20" M43.

It sure is addictive HI Khukuris. There used to be a commercial regarding potatoe chips, "Jays" you just can't eat one. Maybe some of you are old enough to remember.

My wife watched me Saturday morning working out and said she wants to "play" too. I want to get a light Khukuri for her.

All the best,
Sam

Glad you asked for opinions, and not facts, because you are in an area that is purely personal - my favorite is an 18" GS, from among the choices you put up, and it is just because the blade fits me. Others will weigh in on the blades that fit them. "Fit" is the controllability, comfort and sureness of handling that each individual experiences in using a selection of blades. Listening to comments will help, but the tried and true method is to buy them all, sort them out, and pick your own winner. Or let it pick you. If Samurai Dave can be Southwestern Sales Manager, I'm gonna try for the Cumberland area :p

Funny you should ask, Sam. I was working with both earlier this morning. For me, the Kobra is definitely quicker. My Kobra is about 6 oz. lighter than the GS, plus its POB is closer to the cho than the GS's.

Actually here in "Saudi", they're using that potato chip slogan again. :o

I find that the 15" fits me best, but the Malla I have is really growing on me. The handle is a bit big and I haven't got out the sandpaper yet :)

I'm rambling...

Problem is they are handmade by different kamis. There can be 4-6 ounces or more difference between one Sirupati and the next, or one Chitlangi and the next. I have 2 village Chainpuris apparently by the same itinerant kami 17 inches long. One weighs 14 ounces, the other 24.

Sirupati ( relatively thick blade )
Chainpuri ( thinner than above )
Udhaipur (Gelbu special) ( single fullered )
Chitlangi ( double fullered )
Kobra

I'm guessing that if you weighed 10 average 20" khuks by HI of each of the above types they'd end up heaviest at the top, lightest at the bottom of the above list. But the variation in weight between types is less than the variation between diffenent khuks of the same type.

The only khuk with much consistency from one to the next is the bottles of Khukuri rum you'll need to drink after the frustration of trying to quantify the above.

You have it pegged pretty well, Rusty.

Generally, the Kobra is the quickest of them all but no matter which model when you get the right "quick" one for you it will feel almost weightless in your hand and you'll be able to move just about as fast with it as without. You'll know when you get it.

Thanks fellows for the comments. It is pretty much what I thought. My preference is the M 43. The sirupati wieghs and feels the same as my M43, athough the slimmer blade is a tad longer. So my point is I want to get one for my wife, who approached me with interest. She has already commented how heavy they feel, so........

My point is I love every khukuri that is offered. I know they all "heft" in their own way. Maybe I will be fortunate to own 8 or 10. I think she would like a HI khukuri regardless what model type and would use what I have but if I get one that is "hers", she will allow more to filter in the house. Heck she tried mine out.

Five khukuris in less than 5 weeks is pushing it!
But a HI khukuri is a good "drug".:D
