What are your guy's opinion on the Kabar kukri for chopping foliage/brush, taking down small trees, wood splitting/battoning and maybe even as a shovel if the ground isn't too hard? I know the HI kukris and CS Gurkha are better choices - but I'm trying to stay ~$50

I have had a ka-bar khuk for about 3.5 years and I love it for brush, vines, small to med sized trees and limbs (up to 10 or so inches) and even food prep. Just keep in mind it's a machete.

I prefer the handle on the Kabar to the CS, that hook really helps. the HI are likley better quality all around, but I'd hesitate to put whatever CS has as better than Kabar. Mine is my go-to chopping blade, and I havn't felt a need to replace it.

Cold Steel's $20 kukri "machetes" don't best the Kabar, but the Cold Steel gurkha kukris are definitely all around better than Kabar kukri... they adhere a lot more to the kukri design and have VERY thick spines.

Here's a good comparison of Cold Steel's kukri offerings:

Do you know about Greg Quinn's old review of this product on Gunblast.com?

Yep - first article I ran into after someone recommended I take a look at the kabar kukri. I've read a few other reviews, but was more curious as to what Blade Forum people who have personally used these have to say

Kewl. I'll be watching this thread to see what others have to say: you've whetted my interest. I've been periodically looking for something sensible to carry up at Dad's place in the N. Ontario bush and have been torn between a hatchet (most commonly seen on belts thereabouts), a kukhri and one of those Condor Knife & Tool Bush Knives - you've got me thinking kukhri again.

A hatchet is nice for hacking away at trees and splitting wood, but a thick spined kukri will accomplish the same thing while also being able to clear vegetation like a machete and do finer cutting chores that a knife would do... If I were in a survival situation and had $100-150 to spend on something for larger cutting tasks, it would definitely be on a HI kukri hands down

No kidding. I'd looked at their stuff and just didn't like the pix on the site enough, I guess. I'll look again - thx. :)
