I'm on the hunt for a new blade. Nothing specific, I just want to look at stuff that is less mainstream and potentially find myself an under rated gem. Don't need specific model recommendations, just tell me some branda you really like but that aren't talked about much.

If I were to contribute a brand here, it'd be shadowtech. The name is a little silly but their knives are no nonsense.

Lots of nice stuff from Guardian Tac.
Also, Pro Tech. Well known, but not discussed as much as others. Excellent manuals along with their fantastic autos.

Any number of the newer Chinese makers, ( like Rike, Carson Tech........). Have not caught on with many mainstream sellers, still have that stigma of "inferior Chinese product". Some are great knives though.

Great thread idea. Will be keeping an eye on the answers!
As for my personal contribution I would throw out Maxace. Disclaimer: haven't used one of their knives yet, it's in the mail :)

do you own one? if so what're your specific thoughts on them? They had a design I fell in love with but didn't know whether the price was justified or not
yes I have/had four of them. three folders (H5, H6-S1, H6-S1 Carbon) and one fixed (Bushcraft II). I think they're easily some of the best knives for price/quality out there. fit & finish is always excellent, materials are very good and designs are simple and effective.

They've got a neck knife in d2 with kydex for under 50$?! and use sandvik 12c in some folders? Is this real life?;)

CRKT without a doubt. People have bad memories of their earlier stuff, but they've stepped up their game a lot in the past five years or so.

Swiss Army Knives (SAK)

  • Thin (cuts most of the stuff I need to cut easier than thicker blades)
  • High quality finish; well beyond the price point when compared to knives costing two or three times the price and SAK always gets you more blades for the price.
  • Good enough steel once you learn to grind that useless obtuse edge into shape.
  • Nice walk and talk AND CONSISTENT KNIFE TO KNIFE AND YEAR TO YEAR (DECADE TO DECADE) meaning never too hard to open but always crisp stops and closing.

Boker . . . I hope you boys are taking notes here. ;)

I actually got my first crkt last year, the obake. wasn't sure about the brand before that, but its a beautiful knife, executed perfect for what it is, and thw price is great to boot!

Thanks everyone for the input, you've given me, and I'm sure others plenty of knife porn to look at :)

SAK is probably the most well known of anything mentioned here but id agree, they're very under rated. great points you made! ( pun intended)
