I would like to have some opinions about the springfield armory 1911 -A1 full size match. The intended use would be informal plinking/home protection. The law (in Italy) sees this model as "sporting gun", thus I would be allowed to keep it at home without locking it up in a safe (Other weapons which are classified as "common guns" must be kept locked in a safe when at home).
I've become oriented towards this model because it comes at a decent price and usually receive good reports. Is anybody around familiar with them? I would like specifically to have some opinions as to its accuracy and trigger smoothness/weight.
Thanks
Fausto

I have used one at the range quite frequently (it belongs to a friend) and I think it stands up to all its claims. Its accuracy is just fine. I can't say much about the trigger pull as my firiend has modified his quite extensively.
Anyway, I think that it's a great pistol.

I thought that the gun laws in Europe are more restrrictive. Glad to hear that I was wrong.

Thanks for the info!
European guns laws are in general more restrictive. In italy restrictions are mainly focusing on the kind of guns allowed on the market (based on caliber/occultability/mag capacity/weather conditions/sense of humor of the person in charge of the whole process) and on the release of CCW permits.
E.G.: in my town (600000 inhabitants city with slight criminality problems) there are only 500 CCW issued. They used to be 700 but, this year, the government office in charge decided to suppress 200 of them without any explanation (or better claiming that there was no need for them).
Sport and hunting permits are relatively easy to obtain instead. With hese papers one can own both sporting/hunting guns and common guns and take them to the range or hunting. All guns + max number of rounds in one's hands must be declared to the local cops station. "Sport" guns don't need to be locked in a safe as long as normal common sense rules are observed but all the other ones (common) must be kept locked in a safe.
Pretty complicated isn't it?

I just like the concept of "occultability". But seriously, the SA 1911 is a great gun.

My .02 cents when talking 1911's. When talking defensive purposes, make an ammo choice and see if you can run 500 rounds through it with no problems. If sucessful, stick with that ammo. You don't need to go out and buy 500 rounds all at once of coarse, if the first box of 50 gives no problem, buy a second box until you are sure it is reliable in your gun. Same goes for magazines since they are a main cause for a stoppage in the first place. Choose a quality proven magazine, such as Wilson, and stick with it for your defensive ammo.

There's a lot of information about SA's here:

including some contributors from Italy. Investigate the Springfield Armory forum on the site and do a search. You'll come up with some good information that might be helpful in making a decision.

Faus,
Good piece, before buying ck it out, strip it if you know how,at least ck it with a bore light, also ck the mag.make sure spring is strong.Have you ever fired a .45??If not,go to a range, shoot one,you may or may not like it.
Be safe,
