Opinions needed, secondary edc blade...

Hello all,

I am looking for a second edc blade. I have boiled it down to the Recon 1 but I cannot decide between Clip point or Tanto point. My main edc is the Mini AK47, I use this for all edc tasks (except food prep) and absolutely love it. Now I would like a second knife, or backup blade, for only 2 purposes; self defense and the occasional food prep (nothing beyond cutting a sandwich, peeling an apple or spreading peanut butter) I will be stripping the blade coating for this purpose. I carry a concealed firearm off duty (I am a LEO), but want a Recon 1 for an absolute backup self-defense option. (I have some limited training in edged weapons). What are your thoughts?

Get the tanto. Here's why.

I love the tanto point as much as the next however those tests show penetration. A utility usages like skinning an apple and such I would still go with a clip point IMHO.

clip point Just seems to me to be better all around use. I have tanto's Other than for snap cut I don't really care for it.

If you have a knife for general cutting already, and want a secondary blade for defence, then I'd suggest the XL Voyager Vaquero fully serrated. Everything that makes the Spyderco Civilian so nasty, but in a much bigger package and you don't need great skill to rip through flesh right to the bone. Anyone who has even a remote sense of self preservation will see that thing open and think, "too much hassle." Although the AK-47 is a great knife I'd balance the Vaquero with a clip point medium Voyager. FFG, stone washed, a great little EDC package.

You can probably get the Vaquero and Voyager for the cost of a Recon 1.

If you can't decide between the Clip-point or Tanto-point, then going with the Spear-point might be it.

I prefer the clip point or spear point for edc usefullness.

That said, I carried one of their old recon 1's with the tanto point for about a decade. It worked well enough for EDC.

get the talwar it has the wave feature with a 5.5 in satin finish blade so you wont have to stip the coating

I feel that a clip blade is more useful overall; however, since the knife will primarily be for back-up, I don't think you can go wrong with either configuration.
