I have a large George Sakai Bowie I got from AG Russell a few years ago. Anyone have it and have used it or other George Sakai knives? The steel is a high speed steel, anyone try it out? This Bowie may have at some point been sold by Cultlery Shoppe as the Teton Bowie.

They still make the large 9.25 inch bowie in HS steel (SRS15) , and 440C. The High speed model costs quite a bit more, as you would imagine. I've wanted one of the HS bowies myself for quite a while now.

I have no info on wether it's full tang, or what is under that rubber like grip.

link "G Sakai" will take you to G.Sakai section
go to page 3 and there you will find knife as it's sold now. It might have different markings now. The only one around here I know of that has one that can really tell you about the steel , and how it works is Vassili. he posts here as "nozh 2002", and his home page is http://playground.sun.com/~vasya/ Unfortunately for me it's in russian. He has done some amazing work in steels, and their edge retention, sharpness etc. He's the one to ask anything about your knife. Joe

Thanks, AG Russell sold it for about $125- 150, so it was a bit out ofmy range, but I always wanted it and I sold my Coldsteel Carbon 5 Trailmaster second. The Bowie sold at Cutlery Shoppe for about $99, maybe not the high speed steel.

Hi Cbach8tw,

G.Sakai is a maker in Seki-City, Japan. There is no "George" Sakai. There is Susumo (father) and 5 sons. No George. ( the "G" stands for Gerber. Sakai used to make a lot of the Gerber knives and they became known as Gerber Sakai in Seki-City.

They are subcontractors and the make a lot of knives for named makers. (Spyderco, SOG,, Cold Steel, etc) They do make some of their own designs, but not many.

The are probably one of the best makers in the world.
