Hey all!! My leather guy I was using for my sheaths got too pricey, so I started doing my own Kydex sheaths. What are your opinions on this kind of system, instead of a belt clip. I use both large and small Tekloks. What does everyone think of them?

I use large tek loks on all my kydex. It iliminates the need to determine carry style beforehand. I use knockoffs now that work great and are about $2 each. You will need longer Chicago screws and posts for sheaths. What they send is too short.

The real question is what do you think of them? You said you are already using them.

The other option is to learn how to do leather. I think leather working is a valuable skill to learn. Especially if your a knife maker. I don’t think kydex should be chosen as a way out of leather. Kydex is good but it’s not a replacement for a good leather sheath if leather is what the knife needs.

Don’t let kydex be a crutch preventing you from learning how to work with leather.

That is my feeling also - some knives almost demand leather sheath, while other styles of knives are happy with Kydex.

Love teklocks on my duty belt!
I’ve never used them off duty, so I can’t say. But boy it is nice to be able to take stuff on and off a belt without having to remove everything else!!

I like them with the option of any mode of carry is a big plus. Sometimes I carry horizontal on my back and sometimes vertical right or left side.

That is something hard pressed for a leather sheath to do.

i think they are too thick  they make whatever you are wearing a 1/2" wider. i like the utilclip , they are much thinner and available in a few styles.

I agree, I think they are too bulky. Too many knife makers only make sheaths as an afterthought, without enough thinking as to sheath design, often just making a sandwich or taco out of Kydex and slapping a Tek-Lok on it. That's... better than nothing. But suitable for not a whole lot beyond open belt carry and attachment to webbing.

I wish more knifemakers put serious thought into making sheaths that are secure without being overbuilt, bulky, or preventing easy draw of the knife and that don't dull the edge of sheathed knives.

I think they're great. Why worry about the weight of a small piece of plastic, when your carrying a piece of steel around.

I love them.
If you're not doing a huge fancy bowie, and don't know how the knife will be carried, drilling for a Tek-lok is a simple, versatile solution, and the clip itself is a ~$10 add-on.

I use SMALL (haha, in all caps) Tek-Loks almost exclusively. A knife has to be pretty darn big to warrant something as bulky as the full-size ones. For my own use, I orient them opening-up, which makes getting EDC blades on and off the belt really easy, without removing the belt or the knife from the sheath. In a more uh, "vigorous environment", I might prefer open-down for the obvious reason.

I do leather as well. It's nice to be able to offer options. Also some knives just have to have leather. On the width thing, if you keep the top of the tek Lok below the handle, the amount it adds to sticking out is greatly reduced. I also prefer this as it rides a little higher and makes concealing a longer blade easier.

I have done a few kydex and only sourced leather but I really like the tek lok. I've even changed a few other makers belt clips upgrading to tek. Good stuff in my opinion.

Where are you finding these for $2?!

One very nice brand of kydex sheath I've had before they did their own custom fold over belt loops, two for each sheath, one being wider than the other, they have a very flat fit and are multi positional too. I have successfully copied their loops using a sized g10 slab for shaping, gives great sharp corners when shaping.

I like Tek loks a lot and so do customers. Great for sheaths that will be used and abused. Buy the real ones not the knockoffs, if had issues with the safety lock falling off and they are just junk (hence cheap). I also have been using 2 softloops nylon lately and like them better for the average user. Allows multiple carry options and is also a lot slimmer, especially for edc blades
