Between the following setups which would be your preference for a universal set up that can handle a wide range of steels.

DMT XC, C, F, XF ($200) or Norton Med Crystolon, Fine India, Norton Acsent Fine Ceramic ($170).

I'm curious more then anything, thanks.

The DMT setup will handle any steel you throw at it, including high Vanadium carbide steels.

The catch is "wide range of steels" and AlOx isn't up to it, while diamonds are.
Diamond handles all steels. It's not my first choice for simple steels like 1095 and I'd want something else to finish my kitchen knives, but they will indeed sharpen everything.

Diamonds for sure, although I wouldn't bother with a 4 stone progression with diamond plate. Just C and F and maybe a fine waterstone for kitchen knives.

OK, Thanks. I thought the latter was the more practical set up overall but I wanted others' thoughts.

Either set up will be fine depending on what steels you are using. I think the majority of replies here suggesting diamond are because of the "wide range of steels" part of your question. If you are not using steels that have a high volume of hard carbides the second set up will be fine (even preferable). Diamonds will be more versatile in that they will handle any steel.
