My father is in his late 70's and his birthday is coming up. I'm looking at getting him an AG Russell Premium Scout knife- he was big time into scouting back in the late 30's and 40's and he loves his old Camillus one. So, can anyone who has one comment on the quality, etc... for the price.

Also, I'm looking at getting him one of the Cold Steel Country Classics, I'm not sure which one yet. If anyone can comment on the quality of those, I would appreciate it. And yes, I know how some people feel about Cold Steel, so I don't need to hear that, just comments on the actual quality of the knives.

Thanks for the help.

I've never heard anything bad about the A.G.Russell Scout, I find them to be a tad pricey, but quality is high.

The Cold Steel Country Classics are actually made by Camillus and reflect that level of quality, good users but the same Camillus name knife is cheaper.

If your father really liked his Camillus one, check Ebay for one of these Remington R4 Scout or Camp knives. They are made by Camillus and I recently bought this one for under $25.00.

Heck, if you look hard enough, you can find excellent original examples of the early Scouts. May cost a few bucks, but the workmanship... *drool* :D

As far as I know, Camillus has yet to release any knives in Carbon V, though Case does as their CV.

S and S has a point, Camillus doesn't use Carbon V in their own name line, they do have some floating around in straight carbon steel though.

When I said "same" I was thinking patterns and not steels.

I had a Russell Scout knife for awhile and it was well made. Main blade of 154CM I believe. I'm sure your father would be thrilled with it.
Girl Scouts had knives too, you know. Mine is by Kutmaster. Now I need an old Cub Scout knife:D

I have the AG Russell and it is top of the line, great knife--- I carry it all the time.

Ok, thanks everyone. I'm specifically looking at the AG Russell b/c my father has seen it in the mailings and mentioned it several times now. It will probably not get hard use, but since it is a gift, I was looking at something special. I will also like to get the shield engraved with his initials. I may be getting him a Marble's sheath knife too since he has mentioned that several times.

I've asked about the Cold Steel b/c they would be more of a user knife, I can get some at dealer price and I actually just ordered a Hunter to see for myself. The traditional knives have not been my interest but I've been reading about Nessmuk and I may have to start getting some.

But anyway, I wanted to make sure the quality is there for that price. So thanks.

Oh yeah, that Remington is very nice, I'll have to look for one.

I've owned the Cold Steel stockman, and while it was a nice little knife, the Queen small stockman that I have blows it out of the water. Once you handle the real materials on the Queen, you'll be hooked. Also, they cost more than the Cold Steel, but not too much more. I also had been looking for a Cold Steel Remington style one blade lockback, I forget the name of it, but my searches for it made me join this site. Anyway, I found the Queen Mountain Man, which filled my needs, and is a very well made knife.

The "Ozark Hunter" (Camillus made) and like me, you will keep looking.

The way it was explained to me, was that while they began initial marketing, the knife never made it into mass production.

I keep haunting knife shows and the net looking, but the only one I ever saw was a picture in a knife magazine article about it.

:(

I believe it was an issue of Tactical Knives. I've long since forgotten about getting one. The Queen fits the bill for me.

THanks, I coldn't remember the magazine, but it was TK. I keep hoping somewhere out there I will find one, not to use, but I collect R1306 patterns and would love to find one, but so far I have never seen any evidence that any were actually sold. AAAGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nor have I. I'd actually like to try a CS slipjoint to see what Camillus can do, but the Ozark simply doesn't exist.

IMHO, your better off grabing a Camillus house name, half the price and for some weird reason, nearly EVERY Cold Steel slipjoint I have handled had weak backsprings compared to a Camillus house name.

I am at a loss to explain that, since both are made by Camillus????

Well...I hate to say this, but I had bought three of the scouts, and they were a big dissappointment.

They were basically camillus made scout knives (for russell) with bone handles and a 154 CM master blade. The can openers on all three had blade rubbing problems. The hole punch on one, it did not sit inside the handle properly (the blade kick was too high). On one, the acorn shield was crooked, and on another it was not properly inletted, and there was a 2mm open space around it. I did end up sending them back. They were not worth the money. I could have purchased a handload of delrin scout knives from camillus for much cheaper, and the same quality (same size, same 420 can opener, hole punch, bottle opener).

Thank you for the input, I am reconsidering the scout. How recent were your experiences?

I received the Cold Steel 2 Blade Hunter and I am actually quite impressed. Fit and finish are quite good, the springs are very stiff, I take chips out of my almost non-existant thumbnails everytime I take the blades out. The blades themselves arrived shaving sharp. I'm very pleased with it. My father checked mine out and now he wants one.

hmmmmmm...it was this past fall I believe?

The scout is made by camillus, and if you buy their (camillus') basic $24.00 scout knife you will get the same basic knife, 420 blades and all (except for the high end steel master blade, handles, and acron shield and a "little bit" extra polish).

If you can do it, and don't mind the work. You could just buy a basic camillus scout knife and change the handles and give it some better polish. Now, of course you won't have the fancy master blade, but it will still save you much more money, and you can "work ou the bugs" yourself.

I also have the "afore" mentioned remington R4, and it's a much better knife, and I think I paid $24.00 fior mine many years ago (and of course camillus made it also).

Ok, thanks very much, after looking at the AGR Scout's price and considering the opinions here, I think that I am going to pick up one of the Cold Steel Stockman's, a Marble's Ideal, and possibly a regular Camillus scout knife. Even with all 3 of those, the total price will probably be the same as for just the AGR Scout.
