Opinions on Bear and Sons?

One of the places I've purchased from sends out email specials and there are a lot of attractively priced Bear knives in "Kentucky Blue Grass" bone. I've never handled one, can anybody comment on the craftmanship? I believe the steel is listed as "440" which is kind of vague. Thanks for any and all comments/replies.

I have one of the Bear Damascus Stockman's, and am going to buy a Damascus hunter after seeing the quality the Stockman was made with. I love my Damascus Stockman from Bear. Great quality for the price. The steel is beautiful.

I had a Heritage Limited Barlow. I think they upgraded the steel to 440C on those now, but back then it was 440A. I believe the reg. knives that state 440 is 440A. As for quality, maybe they've improved, but the one I had wasn't that impressive. I think the msrp was $100 or so.

Anyways, depending on the price & if it's a newer one, it might be a decent knife, but again, if it says 440, it's probably 440A.

I have a Bear MGC stockman purchased from a MAC Tools rep. MAC Tools logo etched on main clip blade. It has bone-stag scales. Fit and finish of this one is fair to good and it was not very sharp out of the box. I have been trying to get it sharper but it is still not to my liking yet. The knife is not as good as my recent Case purchases overall. Just my opinion. This is the only experience I have with Bear presently.

I've been looking at them lately. There aren't many affordable US made Bowies. Fewer still with natural scales. Thanks.

I like that they are made in USA. I purchased a slipjoint, however, and was so underimpressed with fit, finish, and absolute inability to keep an edge, that I quickly gave it away.

I would consider them if their reputation improves, but barring that, I won't be fishing from that well again.

Here's the one I am getting next from Bear.

$159.00 sure seems like a great price for what you get.

Am right now using a new B&S yellow delrin carbon bladed barlow that I scored for $24 from Smoky Mountain. The blades came razor sharp and for the price and quite impressed. Makes for a great work slippie.

does the pin crack come with the price? Watch for that sort of thing, quality control is not the best. Their Bowies are better than the slipjoints they make. Their damascus is some of the best around on production knives. I bought a stockman last year and was not impressed at all with the F&F. Just sub par all round.

I haven't owned a Bear knife in about 10 years, but as of that time, my opinion of them wasn't very impressive. Poor quality workmanship and cheap materials.

Who knows, maybe they've improved. I suppose anything's possible.

Back when Camillus closed, our local BSA District got some new Scout patterns in - not the regular Scout knife pattern, but other newer designs. Fit & Finish on all was not very good, and a bunch were returned.

The newer folders I've handled in the local hardware stores aren't any better. I can't comment on their fixed blades.

thx - cpr

Their Damascus is made by their 'Alabama Damascus' shop, also in Jacksonville, Alabama. Kershaw uses them for Damascus blade material. You do need to handpick folders to get a decent fit/finish/operation. I have a pair of 97 pattern - large Buck 110 style - lockback 5" blades. The $52 MSRP ('04 Catalog) 297 is oak scaled - and pedestrian, at best, in it's fit and finish. I had to pick over several at closeout in 'Academy Sports' to find one that would reside near the center of the brass liners when closed. Of course, I didn't check lockup - and it has play. I thought $25 closeout price was fair... until I recalled that a real Buck 110, a work of art in comparison, was less than that there when on sale.

I 'won' a 597D, the 'genuine India stag' handled/Damascus bladed version, on evil-bay for <$50 - a real bargain, I hoped (MSRP $150 '04 Catalog). I was shocked - it came as perfect as any production folder I had seen, with just a bit tight on the lockback release. It followed a Damascus/cocobolo Bowie by a few years - very functional Damascus blade - bargain priced <$100 from that massive knife store near The Smokies. They both came functionally sharp - they would cut thicker paper on a straight push - not cleanly. Far better in a pull, the sawtooth action of the layer edges doing their 'thing' in micro-sawing. The Kershaw Damascus Leek I have, $76 mail order, came with a finer edge - and outperforms the 597D by a wide margin. My best Damascus is my Buck Custom Shop teardrop Damascus 110 - what a beauty - and it works (~$172 9/07).

Night and day difference re that 'custom' 110 vs even the nicer Bear - my 597D. That's sad to me - I wanted to buy from an Alabama source. I suppose RAT Cutlery will have to do... I guess if you want a nicely done US-made slippie, there is always Case - and some Bucks. I recently re-discovered German production - Boker Tree Brand - super.

Yes, I've recently "re-discovered" Boker as well. A big +1 across the boards.

Pic of my Bear and Sons Damascus Stockman. I have had it about 5 years now...still looking pretty good.

I won a MOP damascus peanut on EBay shortly after signing up in ~03. It is fairly good and I still use it on occasion, not a razor but servicible.

Their customer service I found was horrible. They had a fixed blade for 3 months without ever updating me, and only began working on it when called out that they had signed for it, when returned the handles were very mismatched and tip blunted. This was a few years ago so hopefully they are better now.

Never heard a good thing about them, and the damascus bowie I've handled was really...underwhelming. Rounded tip, crooked guard, sharp corners on the ugly handle scales. Also not a fan of their damascus--too dark and heavily etched in a haphazard random pattern. Ick.

I have a small Oak stockman I got about a year ago.

Embarressingly poor quality
looked like a high school project
