I found my old benchmade and was wondering what you guys thought of the griptillian and the 440c steel by benchmade. Let me know what yall think. Thanks.

As far as I'm concerned, BM did a good job with 440C. No matter how well it's cooked, it's still 440C mind you, but the mini-G I had in 440C performed very well for me in the role of a small folder. It was pretty easy to sharpen up, I had no corrosion issues even after taking it to the Atlantic on holiday, and it took a pretty nice edge.

I bought a buck quickfire and the clip on it doesn't stay on my jeans so I may carry my benchmade instead

I really like the mini Griptilian and all of the family members I've given one to are really pleased with them as well. While 440C isn't the latest and greatest steel, it is a good performing steel. If that's what I had, I'd be happy to carry it and use it.

That about sums it up for me.
I like the Griptilian design.
I find 440C to be a good blade steel. Used it for hunting and EDC and it was satisfactory.
And I have never found any alloy that Benchmade did poorly.

Nothing wrong with 440C. What matters is how well it is done. I've seen 440A done very well, in fact. I haven't had much good luck with Benchmade's 154CM, amusingly enough. Got a couple knives in that from them, and they're the only ones I can't get a satisfactory edge onto. Both have a very soft temper.

How do you know they were soft? Have you had them measured?

I have measured the hardnesses of 6 different Benchmade blades. Every one has been within the published Benchmade hardness spec for that alloy.

Because the edge bends very easily. Could be that both are lemons. But they're noticeably soft. Not untempered, but not as hard as most everything else I've got. I should probably send them into Benchmade. But I don't use them that much. It's just annoying that every knife I've tried from BM in 154CM has been impossible to get shaving sharp. I even sent them off to lifesharp and they still could barely cut newsprint.

Happy thanksgiving everyone. My 440c bm gets pretty sharp it'll shave but my new buck will get flat out Sharp as Hell.

Wow that's surprising to hear Crimson! I have numerous BM blades of 154CM and have ZERO problems getting any of them shaving sharp. Now I will tell you I'm not the worlds best sharpener and a shaving edge is what I shoot for and about the best I can do but all my BM's get that sharp easily. No problem to slice newsprint.

I also have a mini Grip in 440C! Its the oval hole opener. I just sharpened it yesterday and its back to a very good edge. It has always been a fine steel for me in my day to day activities. I like the steel and sure wouldn't hesitate to buy another BM in this steel.

I've been looking at a BM knife in 440c. I'm more picky about the function of the knife than the steel type. I have a couple of BM knives in 154cm, and they have been good. In fact I just got a H&K Nitrous Blitz, and I used my stroup with some DMT diamond paste to hone the edge, and this morning I came to the conclusion that I've probably got it sharper than any of my folders. So their 154cm seems pretty good to me, but so does their s30v.
