Can anybody direct me to a comprehensive article about the various blade materials available and what might be the best overall. Am mainly interested in slip joints.
Would also welcome everyones opinion.
Yes, i know this is a broad question and probably full of personal opinion. :-))
thanks in advance

1) There is no "Best Material overall" for knives. There is no one wonder steel that does everything well. Each steel is a compromise of properties, because improving one property is attained at the cost of decreasing another. You have to figure out what properties are most important TO YOU, then find a steel that is optimized towards those properties.

2) For a general article, read Joe Talmadge's Steel FAQ sticky on the Toolshed Forum.

For an easy to read and understand breakdown of the pros and cons for various steels see the "Articles" section written by Phil Wilson on his website.

It is the best short written comprehensive review that I have read on any web site.

Thanks guys - these were two very good pieces. Would still love to hear folks opinion on their favorite steel for custom slip joint that will be used - (no saltwater) - want strength and edge holding - doesnt everybody :D .

EDC usage for me may include cutting or trimming plastic, cutting cloth, cutting cardboard, maybe cutting poly-twine. I don't cut wire or drywall with it, but I might torque it a bit in cutting or trimming plastic. That's how I would use such a knife.

For a knife that was going to spend considerable time in my sweaty pocket, and would be called upon to perform the types of cutting that I personally do, I would want to factor in some corrosion resistance and some toughness in addition to edge retension.

For those properties I'm partial to 154CM / ATS-34, VG10, AUS10, or 440C. Those are listed in possibly decreasing order, but if any one of them were available, it would do. I have tried all of them in various blades and all of them have provided acceptable results for my EDC usage in my sweaty pockets. I had to buy them in lockbacks because they are not commonly available in slipjoints, but since you are going to have a custom made, that wouldn't be an issue for you.

Those are my preferences, YMMV.

1095 simple carbon steel? D2? Other tool steels? Or what about 1095 core with stainless steel sides?
