I would like you guys opinion on blade coatings like cerakote and so on, I do etch some blades and get pretty good results but was wondering about the commercially offered coatings. I don't have special equipment so I need something to air or kitchen oven cure, I appreciate your help and advice.

I think you should ask that *users* in general knife discussion forum .

I personally like cerakote on the right knives. Mainly modern, tactical style fighters and folders.
They're a great way to get a particular color scheme that you can't get any other way.
That said, they do wear and eventually won't look good any more...

I'm a user and don't care for coatings as they wear eventually and don't look great IMO. I have heard on BF that DLC is the most wear-resistant and I have a blade in that (a MT Mini-Troodon) and use it a lot to cut boxes and it still looks fine. Let me find a picture: (It is the one on top).

The photo gizmo reversed my photos, so the bottom one was after using it to cut up many boxes; the top is after I wiped the blade. Whew!

Opinions?
They come off-especially the paints. Nitriding is probably the toughest, followed by hard chrome.

I use a similar product called gunkote on my non-kitchen knives. Seems to last pretty well.

I've heard a lot of good things on GunKote also. I put on one Damascus kitchen knife and it's held up good for the last few days. GunKote goes on thinner than cerakote so maybe wouldn't flake off as bad? Yes, I know coatings are not good on kitchen knives, this is a test of hard using.
