Opinions on colored micarta handles

I just bought a Dozier Pro Guide which has red micarta handles - there is a pic of it and others here. At first I was not sure I would like the colored handle as black seems to be the norm in my collection but it has really grown on me. Is there any advantage or disadvantage to a bright color for sale/resale value? Thanks for any opinions.

Snoopy, Check with any Randall collectors you might know and ask them what is happening with the Maroon Micarta handled Randall knives today. I think you will be surprised at what you will find. There are a large number of Randall collectors that are seriously collecting this color.

Oh, that is nice.

I, for one, am so sick of black knives I could scream! And what arrived in the mail today except a Benchmade Nimravus, black as night. I think I am gonna scream!

I WANT REDS! I WANT BLUES! I WANT GREENS!

GIVE ME PURPLE, CHARTREUSE, MAUVE, TEAL, WHATEVER...

SHOW ME INDIGO!

MANHOOD ASIDE --- I'M SO SICK OF FLAT BLACK, I'LL EVEN CONSIDER POWDER PINK AT THIS POINT!

Am I the only knife enthusiast in the world who isn't color blind?

One of my favorite knives is a Greco MST II that has the honey colored natural micarta. With use it deepens in color to pumpkin orange and I LOVE it! I also am a big fan of the maroon micarta, and red is cool, although I haven't been able to find a cheap source for it yet. I think colors are great. Black is nice, but it leaves a lot to be desired. There are a lot of very tasteful colors of Micarta and G-10, and some obnoxious ones, too, but they are all good if the user likes them! For re-sale value it's whatever is popular at the time.

How difficult was it to get the coating off the Nimravus? How did you do it?

I'm a fan of "different" colored micartas as well, and some of those blue or red G-10 scales I've seen recently are also a welcome relief to my eyes than nothing but basic black, black, black.

I have red/black laminate micarta scales on my Rinaldi TKK and love the look, the definition and layering gives it a very nice grain, like the sample shown by Lynn.

I also have one of the new Desert Warfare Mean Streets with the tan micarta, and think it's a great color choice as well. I don't think some of these alternative colors will show dirt and grime any worse than the basic black will, and the colors should actually give a "patina" of use and character that, IMHO, make a knife more attractive over time.

I just received a Gemini by Johnny Stout. The handles are blue G-10. The bolsters and liners are blue anodized Ti. The backspacer is fileworked blue Ti. The blade is bead blasted ATS34. It is a really great looking knife and it is for sure one of a kind. I'll see if I can scan it and post the pics.

Where do I buy G10 and Micarta? All I've been able to find is black or natural G10, and no Micarta at all. I want to experiment with different handle colors, but I need raw materials to do so.

JB

Thanks for the replies, you have all eased my worries about the brighter than normal handles. I am kind of conservative with colors in general, this is a step in the right direction for me. I am really impressed with the Dozier and I can't even describe how sharp it came. I think I am beginning to understand the value of spending a little more than I would for a factory knife. A couple of months ago I purchased a Randall from a fellow BF member which ended up having a maroon micarta handle that is beautiful - I'm liking the sound of Stab1's post!

Lynn - that is really nice, is it G10?

Gollnick - Sounds like you are not alone on the colors. Hope you will have that model 42 with at the Eugene show - do you do any flipping demos?

Jumbi - the coating came off easily using green scotch bright pads, although it does take some rubbing to get a nice finished look. I tried to rub from blade to spine once the knife was dull enough to do so safely so that the mini scratches from the pads blended in with the grind lines. Removing the coating will dull the knife badly so be prepared for some sharpening when you are done. I have had no rust or stain problems so far. If you search through BF you will find a lot more info.

Thanks again for the input!

That material in Lynn's picture is just Micarta with various layer colors. Koval sells some really crazy stuff with white, blue, red, and black layers, as well as combinations of the above. It's pretty wild stuff! Rob Simonich and Ricky Fowler have been using the stuff Lynn showed for years. It's nothing new. Rob seems best known for his maroon/black combo and Ricky seems to really like orange/black. For plain colors of Micarta you can get white, black, antique gold, combos, maroon, red, etc etc etc.

I like this Combo for a durable, "user" hunting knife package! My idea was the "warm" look of leather with the benefits of Kydex

That honey-colored natural micarta is real pretty. At the ECCKS, Bob Dozier had one on his table that I was about to buy...Until Mrs. Dozier took out a slim outdoorsman with red jigged bone handle slabs. I scooped that up before anyone else could touch it!

That is one great looking material - I always liked the old initial offering of Gerber's L.S.T. in both the Ivory or the Maroon Linen Micarta - that made a sweet looking little knife and was a lot tougher than people expected. Micarta can be a carcinogen however especially the dust... at least that's what I'm told
