I have a couple knives I feel need some edge-thinning and am planning on getting a diamond sharpener for it. For most edge maintenance I use my 204 Sharpmaker but it takes forever to properly thin a thick edge out. The blade in question has sort of a saber grind with a relatively steep, sudden edge bevel that, although it cuts, just isn't quite up to what I want, and I prefer edges at least at 20 degree thinness.
First, I'm planning to get maybe a DMT sharpener and lay it flat on my Sharpmaker rods set at the 15-degree angle to remove the steep bevels' shoulders and set it at a thinner angle, then maybe finish up at a 20-degree angle. Does that sound about right?
Also, anybody else done this, and what other diamond sharpeners or methods have worked well for others? I haven't had to thin out a thick edge before and would like opinions first.
THanx.
