Opinions on DPX Hest II Assault or Heft 4 Assault?

Hey All,

New guy here, sorry if I'm putting this in the wrong place. Anyways, I am in the market for a smaller fixed-blade outdoors/camp/bushcraft knife. I'm particularly looking for something in between the sizes of a Becker BK11 and the BK2. I don't really need something tacticool. I saw that DPX is running a promotion right now that either of these knives is $99 along with some fancy new graphic novel (I don't care about the book). BladeHQ looks to be running the same promotion. On Amazon they run around $120, so I am guessing this is more of a $20 discount rather than a $60-70 discount. Most reviews that I have seen are comparing these knives to others in the $150-180 range, so I was wondering how they stack up compared with, say, $80-120 knives. I know LionSteel makes their knives and the Niolox steel sounds pretty attractive to me, but neither of their sheath's really do it for me.

The Heft looks to appeal to me a little more, as it seems to have most of the same features with a slightly longer blade and a little less tactical look. It looks like the end is meant for prying AND bottle opening rather than the 2 separate locations on the Hest. I have read about some negative reactions to DPX's presence & commenting on some forums, but aside from that, how do most people like their stuff?

Any opinions, and recommendations for better blades are appreciated! Or, feel free to chew me out and send me to a different subforum, haha!

Yep, you're totally right - I've considered the BK16, definitely a nice knife, and substantially cheaper. I guess I was hoping to hear from folks who might say that this or that is better than another for a specific reason.

I would say you can do slightly better, but not for that price. Bk16 is probably good for a lifetime.

Yeah, I'm sure the BK16 is solid, maybe that's just they way I'll go and save another $30-40. Thanks for the input! It's a tad disappointing, I thought maybe more folks would chime in. Is there something I particularly did wrong with my post?

Its made of good steel and by a reputable company (Lionsteel), so if you like it - buy it.
If its worth the higher price compared to a BK16 is up to you.

The steel will hold a better edge and if the coating is the same as on the Hest Folder, its really durable.
I think it is thicker than the BK16, and saber ground, so it won't be as good for slicing.

I would buy it for 99$, its a lot more expensive over here :grumpy:

Well, I went pretty much the opposite direction. I recently found out the Becker BK14 was made in D2 as the BK24, so I snagged one of those and a set of scales instead. Yeah, I know it's the same blade as my BK11, but I am expecting the handle to be a little more comfortable. The BK11 can make it's way into my shooting bag or car, ect.

Still excited about my new buy!

I very much like the HEST, it's a tough little knife. The one in the offer is stainless, niolox i think, mine is 1095 carbon steel.

Nice! Thanks guys. I feel like I'll probably end up buying one of them anyways, I can stick it on my gun belt/shooting stuff.
