Hi all I am hoping to get opinions from the khuk experts on this auction khuk. The auction is over so I should not be breaking any rules about current auctions.

I thought it was a M43. Yvsa, JP was I right? I wanted to bid, but it went way over what I wanted pay with the given info. The pictures aren't the best. But
the shape and the aluminum handle said M43. So what do ya'll think it is?
Thanks,
Mike

I'm no expert, but I like it. Someone else will know more. Here are the pics.

Pictures are less than optimal.

If the seller's description is accurate, it could be a Mk II with a civilian handle job. Khukuris get new handles. (I have an M-43 with a fancy bone handle and another in a gaudy green scabbard.) The blade does not look quite wide enough for a M-43.

Why does an aluminum handle say M-43 to you?

I was going by something I rembered reading that khuks of that era ww1- ww2,
could have aluminum handles, that coupled with the blade shape made me think,
M43. I could be wrong, that's why I'm asking for opinions. I'd like to see enough
knowlege shared here so we could kantei a khuk the way they do a nihonto.

We need Mr. Powell -- and his book!

The most famous military from WWI -WWII with an aluminum handle would probably be the "Maharaja" model -- the khukuri bought by the Maharaja of Jodpur for troops he raised. It did not have a continuously curved spine. There used to be a picture of it on the HI site. It is shown at p. 195 of Ron Flook's book, "British and Commonwealth Military Knives."

Aluminum seems to be a "not rare" "not common" handle material.

I have seen, live and in pictures, a few dozen M-43's, none with an Al handle.

My guess would be Hanshe or Sirupati... The M43's that I know of have wider blades and curvier handles. Wish JP was here to tell us exactly what it is....

Yeah,
The more I look at it the more it looks like a sirupate. For some reason the ebay shots made the blade look much wider. Of course it could just be age and my eyes! JP, Yvsa you guys out there?

I have a M-43 in metal. It looks identical to wood and ivory ones in my collection. Intergal bolster and two rivits on slab grip.

I don't know enough yet to speak knowledgably about it but it looks a bit wide to be a Sirupate to me.
Pretty khukuri though.:D

I'll take it the Kamis make the civilian khukuris however the spirit moves them. The modern military issue pieces are more to a pattern, but those who recall the HI FAQ pages will remember several variations of the M-43 handles.
