I am thinking of picking up an Emerson Commander and his neck knife, the La Griffe. These would be the production models and not the custom. I am looking for opinons on both these blades and some places to buy them online.
Thanks for the help.

Decado, I have owned afew of both of these knives. I can say without reservation, the La Griffe is a great little knife!

As to the Commander. I love the design. The first one I had was the best one I had. Like a fool, I sold to a friend at a weak moment. The next two I owned I was not impressed with. I had a severe problem with the blade rubbing the liner. The grind lines were not even. And the scales on one did not fit evenly. I have heard there was a small design change to the liner lock. I am not sure what was done and have not seen any with the change. If you can, take a look at the Commanders before you buy. You can always send the knife to Emerson to be fixed if there is a problem. IMHO, you should not have to send a $200 (SRP) back to the manufacturer for repairs.

In fainess, I am only one opinion. There are others who will tell you they have had absolutley no problems with their Commanders.
No one here will try to pass bad info to you. Everything you get will be based on the person's experiences.

I carry a LaGriffe, and a Commander daily. They are my primary off duty carry pieces, and both are very good in that role. I have a very extensive collection of Emerson customs, and neither knife is up to the "ground by Ernie himself" standard, but they are great for the money, and you still get a great design. The price and demand of the customs make them tough to get (and then beat on), so I think you'll be happy with the combo you mentioned.

Dirk & nyeti, thanks for your replies. I am pretty much sold on the La Griffe. I agree with you Dirk, I should not have to send a $200.00 knife back to the factory for work. Did you send the one you had trouble with back?

Also where did you guys get yours? Right from Emerson?

Thanks again.

I took a chance and traded for a used Commander sight unseen and got a perfect knife. The grinds are right and the blade doesn't hit the liners. If possible, like any knife, I would rather see it first but in my experience I have had no problems with mine. Mine seems to be a '99 if the date on the blade is the date of production. There is usually one for sale right on these forums. For retailers see the links section. www.knifeworks is a good one if they carry Emerson knives. Hope this helps becuase if you can afford it you should pick one up. This knife is a blast!

Actually I didn't send them back. I ended up trading both off to people who didn't mind the problems. They just wanted the knife. I have read some posts here about people who have sent knives back. The majority have received very quick service and were quite satisfied. There were a few who had a long wait and didn't get the problem fixed to their satisfaction.

I've said before, Ernie has some great designs and ideas, he just needs to up the quality control.

Not that it's necessary at this point, but consider this another strong vote for the La Griffe. I have owned quite a few neck knives, and since I received the Griffe I have sold every single one of them. It, to me, is the pinnacle of neck knives. It is EXACTLY what I need a neck knife to be. The only way I'd get rid of it is if I replaced it with the titanium version.
