I’m looking for a good camping axe to make a kit with a SAK and a 4” fixed blade or folder. Any suggestions?
What do you think about Estwing axes and model E-24A in particular?
Any opinion will be appreciated!

I have an E24A Estwing hatchet. My impression is the one piece head/handle makes it basically bomb proof, much like the Estwing hammers. It is also on the heavy side (2 lbs) for backpacking. The steel is 1055 plain carbon. The factory edges will need some work to get them shaving sharp, although most of them are not too bad. I picked through about 10 to find the one with the best edge, and it took me only a few minutes with a DMT hone to get it shaving sharp. The worst ones probably would have taken a few more minutes work with a good file, before going to the DMT.

I don't remember the model number, but I have a 24" Estwing that is pretty good. It is thinly ground, gets good penetration, and holds an edge. It is not as good as my GB small forest axe, which is one sweet swinger. The Estwing stays in the truck and is a loaner, whereas the GB is for my hands only.

If you have left it in the rain, it's easy to clean up, unlike wood handled axes which swell and loosen. That alone makes it relativley child proof. (old fart thinking, here.)The blue poly grip and fiberglass shaft make it easier to see in the brush, too, so somebody doesn't forget it as easily.

Mine is a steel handled Estwing, with synthetic wrap for a handle. I have to admit they are pretty indestructable as I've had mine about 8 years. That is about an eternity for El Destructo, just ask any of my ex wives. What Cliff has to try to do comes naturally to me.

Mine is about 24 years old also. I had been brought up on estwing hammers so when I needed an ax I got the estwing. Good design and rugged.
