Opinions on Extrema Ratio?

Not much talk around here about knives from Extrema Ratio.

To me, they look amazing. And I'd get one, but I'd like some opinions on them first.

And what is N690 Stainless??

Böhler N690 is an Austrian Steel roughly comparable to 440C + Mo + Co. Quite good stuff, takes a fine edge and is less brittle then 440C at the same hardness.

Oh maybe it is just comparable to VG-10 and I mixed it up a bit. Thanks for the clarification, Nightwind.

clin4580,
I often read about people telling that Extrema Ratio knives look like Strider copies. I somehow just don´t get it. Yep, they use a Tiger stripe finish and it´s true that their market segment are "high-end hard use tacticals". But that´s about it IMO.
Could you please show me a pic of an Extrema Ratio knife and the Strider model it is supposed to be copied from?

I don't think they look like Striders but as a Strider fan, I wish they would stop using Tiger striping

I heard that N690 is ATS-34. I've also read that it's VG-10. I read a long time ago that it's comparable to a 440x steel.

Leaves me with questions..

I don't think Extrema Ratio knives are influenced by Strider in any way because Extrema Ratio has been around longer (est 1997), I think.

As for that strange looking tang, I think I've seen similiar tangs used on Randalls.

The strange looking tang is found only on the Doberman-I very few of those knives are going to make it over to our shores, Frank of target-masters (the distributer) is going to concentrate on the inegral style, which have a hidden tang.

N690 has the same checmical composition as the one published for VG-10, i cannot tell you what the other differerences between the steels would be.

The new knives, Golem/Fulcrum are flat ground, but you should not under estimate a hollow grind, since the one that extrema uses is rather unique. It allows them to apply better edge geometry to a 1/4 in thick peice of steel.

The the differences between extrema ratio and strider are vast, i dont see how anyone could consider them a "knock off"

Also, many of their designs and many aspects of their knives has been dictatated by a close relationship to the Italian military.

I remember that the selection of N690 was one of the things that the military guys wanted.

And while we are comparing them to other knives we should probably pick ones that are actually comparable. such as similar price range and materials.

So that would be sub $200, stainless, tacticals, with polymer handles.

Schtik, I don't think that's true...keep in mind that Strider made knives for military/spec ops for many years before selling to the general public.

Yep, I´m pretty sure that I read somewhere that Strider Knives have been around for a much longer period of time than one might initially think. I don´t remember exact dates tho.

Schtik, I forgot to mention one thing: if you use the search function and type in "extrema ratio" you´re gonna receive quite a lot of information about them.

I've read all the Extrema Ratio threads.
I'm actually looking for more scientific info on their knives...
The handle is made of a mysterious materal, and the steel is mysterious as well.

I'm ordering a Dobermann II today or tommorrow from Target-Masters.net, and I hope to be somewhat satisfied with the knife.

So how long has Strider Knives been around?

I thought they were started only a few years ago.

i believe that the new ones are Kraton.

I am hopeing that some custom makers will make some micarta or G10, i believe that it was bill seigle that made the G10 handles for the beckers

I'd like to get my hands on one of these

Taken from American Handgunner, Tactical 2002 Annual

"In 1984, while serving in the Army, Mick [Strider] took up building knives for his fellow soldiers. According to Mick, he made around 75 knives from 1984 to 1994. In 1994, the up-and-coming business was awarded a government contract to make knives for Naval Special Warfare Group 1. These models were known as the WB and BG. In order to fulfill this contract, Mick became partners with Duane Dwyer. "

I remember an article sometime back in Tactical Knives magazine...I think it was the first article they did on Strider. The author referred to the first time he saw the knives at a show. I dont remember the time frame and dont know where my copy of the mag is, but it was apparent that they have been around quite some time...long before 97.

As for the tiger stripe finish...that would seem to resemble Strider knives, however if anybody knows when Maddog (Kevin McClung) first used it, that would be interesting to know. Seems to me he started it several years ago.

In the May 1999 issue, author W.W. Wright writes "I had the good fortune to run into Duane several years ago back at the San Francisco Gun Show"...he makes other references to Strider in the past but doesn't offer any dates...

Yes, I have pics of the Mad Dog Anaconda on my hard-drive...this was the first time that I have seen a striped blade...not sure about the vintage...
