There seem to be more knives offered lately with GITD handles. I currently don't have any, but thinking about it.

What do you think about GITD knives? Useful? Gimmicky? Looks cool or...?

All opinions welcome, but especially those who have owned such knives, I'm curious to know what you like/dislike about them.

I saw a Spyderco (I believe) that had the unused holes for the pocket clip filled with small dots of glow in the dark material. That is a great idea. And looked cool too. I have no idea how they did it. But it looked way better than empty holes. And if you ever drop your knife in the dark, you'd be able to find it. If anyone knows how to do that, let me know.

I'd like a Moonglow Manix 2.

They are mainly for show but the GITDS come in handy when outdoors at night, easier to find them at night. I make an Epoxy form of what you are talking about for some of my fixed blades & they come out great!

If my knife is not in my hand in use than it is in it's sheath that way I always know where it is. Seems a novelty to me. Just my .02

I can see how it could be handy for an outdoors knife in case you drop it or something but I can't see it for a folder. Although I have seen some folders with various tritium inserts and accents that are downright wonderful.

The GITD handles / Scales are pretty cool (I own a GEC Hay'N Helper in NifeBrite), however I haven't found it very useful as it takes light to "charge" the material and the knife spends most of it's life in my pocket.

+1 if it's going to glow in the dark it has to be tritium for me.
I remember when Microtech put tritium in the button of a OTF.
I liked that knife, and half of it was because of the tritium glass vial it had.

How is it useful outdoors?
Does quality GITD stay glowing for hours after a charge or does it dim quickly?
Seems like you would have to charge the GITD then lose it immediately, otherwise it's not going to be glowing when it falls to the ground.

It's cool but I can't think of a scenario where it's useful.

the Aluminate (GITD) powder that i use lasts up to 24hrs if left directly in the sun for 15mins, in sheath or with minor light getting to it it last a good strong 10-12 hrs.

It is helpful outdoors when it is dark, if and when you drop your knife on accident. lets face it, we have all done that once in in our lives. far as day time and accessible light, its more of a gimmicky thing

The quality gitd scales (Kryptoglow for example) will glow for hours and can be bright enough to read by. Could be handy for viewing a map or some other commando activities.

I would think getting a quality GITD scale would be very handy on a camping knife, I have considered one for my 0550.

A buddy of mine gave me native 5 moonglow scales, and needless to say they are still sitting in a box somewhere..?.. come to think of it I don't know where I put them. I don't care for them, just gimmicky.

I have been thinking about getting the Kryptoglow scales for my BK14. I think it would be useful when camping and make the knife very easy to find. Very cool novelty factor regardless.

Love it, love everything about it.

I'm often rushing working outdoors at dusk in a bit into the dark.

I also have a bad Habit of sticking my knife in the dirt or tossing it aside when I need to use my hands for something like knot tying.. Mix that with Hella bad ADD and you loose your knife quickly.

Trying to set up a shelter when it's dark and you loose your k ice halfway through , you're totaly boned.

I love the idea of a glowing handle.

I have high visibility rubber bands (yellow and blaze orange) wrapped around the handle of my jet black kabars to try to help with finding my knife on the ground in low light conditions since it's such a big problem for me.

One mans gimmick and unlikley scenario is another mans serious problem, I always say at least... ;) lol

And come on, they look just plain sexy.

Yeah, many things in a knife including embellishments can be a novelty.

It's pretty cool, collectable... Even useful.
