Opinions on Kabar 1292 Extreme D2?

It's an awesome knife, some say D2 isn't the greatest choice for a utility knife though. I personally like the coating, so haven't stripped it off.

Good knife I've had one for many years, works great for utility usage. I keep it hanging in my small workshop and it has also spent time as a truck knife. I plan to leave mine coated since D2 isn't fully stainless. The blade shape may not fit you need for utility, it can be a bit long for some tasks, but I've gotten plenty of good use out of it.

How’s the edge retention?

I've got both the D2 version and the 440A version (which I've had longer and used very hard)
No worries about the stick tang, I've chopped branches, pried things loose, etc. I haven't used the D2 version much, but if D2 doesn't give up too much in toughness to 440a, it, too, should be fantastic fixed blade for all manner of situations.

The what now?

I didn't realize they ever made that knife in anything but 1095 and D2.
Yeah it’s an older version, looks like the D2 one but has a shorter, grey coated blade. It’s fairly hard to come by depending on where you are.

Yes, it was called the KA-BAR Next Generation Fighting Knife. A google search brings up a couple of youtube videos, a book about it, and a couple of reference pics.

I‘ve had three of the #1282 D2 Extremes, and given two to family. Now have a #1282 and a #1292. Of them both, I much prefer the non-serrated #1292. Only draw-back to these formidable knives, is the D2, from the perspective of difficulty in keeping edge retention. It is a beast, and like it’s predecessors, it’s a fighting knife, born in blood and conflict. No knife I have is any less so designed and crafted. This design is an Apex predator…
