I have this knife but haven't really put it through its paces yet. I might eventually rehandle it in CF. How does the Super Blue hold up as a backwoods knife? Is there special care needs for this steel?

Oil it and keep it dry, pretty much it. I've done some carving with mine, it holds up fine. My knife in Blue Super is significantly smaller, so I haven't chopped with it but it'll baton a wood just fine with no damage.

I've got one of those and managed to chip the blade edge the first time out chopping. I also have the water version (copper on sheath) as well as a 5" with the cherry skin. Also, I noticed that the blade on mine was coated in a clear lacquer, waterproofing perhaps?

cool beans and you are welcome... the few times i did use that Japanese whore it was a cutting machine. :)

CM, I'd test it before using it as a chopping knife out in the woods away from everything. Kanetsune is sort of hit and miss on their quality control and heat treats. That's most likeley going to be run pretty hot. Some I've had have shown symptoms of overheating during the forge, some not.

Usually it will show in the sharpening. If it doesn't feel right, it might not be.
