Opinions on Mini - Socom

Hey everyone. Just wanted to know what you think of the Mini-Socom for EDC. How does it feel in the hand, etc. Thanks.

I don't OWN a mini Socom - I have been looking for a new EDC and testing out my options (an excuse to hang around knife shops). It is small and compact and very, very sharp. It feels solid too. If you have larger hands or like the feel of the bigger knives it probably is not for you but as a slim, compact, discreet knife i was really impressed! Just my 2 cents!

It is really small. Too small. IMHO.

Guys. I do have small hands. I can't even palm a basketball. Taking that into account, do think it would work for me? I also like the idea of a smaller knife. The CRKT LUS is even okay for me. Does the mini feel as small as that?

I agree. The Mini SOCOM is an awesome knife, but it's a bit too small. If you have large hands and want one for every day carry, this is not the knife for you.

I've had a few M-SOCOMS and held a few more. I have one now which I'm waiting to get back from MT for a non warranty related issue.

The Good:

I have big hands and short fingers, size 14.5 wedding band. The knife is very comfortable in my hand. I would not want to rely on it for self defense though.

It's a Microtech, plain enough. They are well made, have good resale and IMHO make some of the best production knives I've owned.

The bad:

Over half of the ones I've been in contact either had blade play or rubbed the liner. Blade play on a liner lock can cause lock failure if it's bad enough and the blade rubbing is annoying to me.

The pocket clip is pretty weak, I have a hard time cliping it to a pair of dockers but it does great on light weight shorts. Some people have complained that it sticks out too far but I've never had mine fall out.

When I get mine back I plan to attach a Benchmade clip to it and change it to my preferred tip up carry which will solve the issue's I don't like.

Bottom line IMO:

Get one, inspect it, if you're not happy send it back. If you buy from 1SKS and ask them to inspect it for you, they will. Most other good vendors should do that as well. Once you search for a while, as I did, you will get a good one and it'll be damn good. I love mine.

BTW Mike T has some for sale at $89.99 in the "For Sale by dealer section", I don't know if he'll inspect it ahead of time for you or not because I think he's been swamped lately and because the price is so low.

There are also a lot of BF'rs that are selling them at good prices and should be able to tell you about the blade play and alignment in advance.

I like mine, but I wish that the pocket clip had a little more traction, I feel a little nervious about carrying it because I think that it could fall out at any time.

Maby microtech should make a medium socom and a mega socom

I dont own a mini-socom, but i've handled an auto mini-socom.
It's a great knife fit and finish wish.
Compared to the CRKT LUS, it fills the hand much better. You still don't get the grip you would on a bigger knife though, but as just an EDC utility blade it's great.
The pocket clip isn't as stiff as it should be, but it still works.

got 1 coming from the sale thursday - a black tanto combo edge - i plan to carry my SIFU as my tactical, and the MINISOCOM as my utlity - i have handled 1 before, wouldnt want it for EDC,too darned small, but, as just a utility knife, it should do well - and at $89.95 for a MT, ya cant go wrong IMHO - also got, a GT411 green handles, black titanium edge tanto blade - am gonna decide between the 2 which 1 is best for utility - the GT was 50 bucks - i hope its the 1 i think it is - but, i think out of the 2, can finally replace my BM AFCK - its really too big for what i use it for, but other than that, it rules.........

I've had a Socom for several years and am thrilled with its qualtiy. For me, the size is great. Having also handled the mini and having times I wish for a smaller knife, the mini fit my hand well (not perfect, come on...it's a smaller knife) and would be an outstanding option. These are knives with which you can't go wrong.

Thanks for the great honest info guys. I cannot take spending $89.99 on a knife lightly, because frankly, I am not going to be able to use it all that much considering that I work in finance. It sounds to me like my money could be better spent on other knives in this price range that have gotten better reviews here on the forums. I just saw how much the markdown on the price was so that piqued my interest. I have a CRKT KFF as my EDC right now and when I get my Camillus EDC from Mike that will be my new EDC. You guys are great and saved me a lot of dough and I truly appreciate that.

BTW, redratsnake, I am a big TOOL fan.

Go for it...I own one of the regular SOCOMS and they rule....I used to have a couple of SOCOM ELITEs, but gave them away to my buddy as he liked them so much...
As for the price, think aboutt this, would you rather pay for 1 quality knife then pay for a couple of normal ones, and in the end you might just end up purchasing the MINI-SOCOM, and you might wonder why you wasted so much time and money buying other knives in the first place...
just my 2cents

I was just going to suggest that you try a REKAT Pioneer when I realized you were the one chewing me out for snatching up the last one Mike had at his blowout thread.

Put in the time and find a Pioneer, you won't regret it!
