Opinions on my Fiskars Axe prototype sheath?

Hi everyone,

I need your honest opinions on a basic bushcraft sheath I've developed for the Fiskars Chopping Axe, and this will also be the same shape (except proportionally smaller) for both the old and newer Fiskars hatchets as well (and possibly the splitting axes as well). There seems to be a dearth of affordable yet attractive leather sheaths for the Fiskars series, hence me playing around with this idea.

Moderators, I'm not a vendor, but do have interest in selling some of these on eBay and/or the forum as a vendor supporter if there's any interest. If not, then I guess it's just show and tell :)

The sheaths are constructed of 8-10 ounce double shoulder veg-tanned leather if anyone is curious. Also, I used only double capped rivets in the interest of making them affordable (as opposed to the much more time and labor intensive stitching). As many of you know, I'm an axe fanatic and these have definitely been a labor of love.

Thanks everyone!

The sheath is in basic black

if their isn't one, a welt is a nice thing on a sheath. otherwise looks great:thumbup:

It's a good looking sheath, functional design. The only thing I would suggest is a welt for sure. It will add some amount of work to the sheath and thus time. I have found that eventually the edge of the axe starts prying the two part rivets apart, they sometimes pop apart but almost always bend. A welt would add that buffer zone so the edge won't get between the rivet heads.

Best regards

noob question, what is a welt?

Hi bud, a welt is a third layer of leather between the front and back of a sheath to keep the blade edge from cutting the stitching. Look at my sheath tutorial, it shows how it's done.

Hi Pipeman,

I studied some of the sheaths from Wetterlings and noticed that the older style Wetterlings didn't have a welt, whereas the new ones do. Being as the older Wetterlings were much cheaper, I'm guessing it was a cost decision. I'd be happy to include a welt if folks want to pay enough for a sheath to be worth it. My impression from checking around is that most people don't want to pay much for an axe sheath, and maybe that's why none are available for the Fiskars because it's just not worth the time and labor.

I haven't gotten any interest here or over at Bushcraft USA (great compliments, but no interest), so I might ending up scrapping this idea..... I hear about people wanting sheaths for these in the forums but I haven't even been asked what I might charge for these. I might throw some up on eBay for kicks as maybe the general public might be more interested if the price is reasonable.

I really enjoy making these so either way it's been fun! Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Cheers, CW
